Been lurking for a few months and decided to introduce myself.

I installed a vc defiant in February this year. It is the stove that I had in my house as a kid and was our sole heat source. Pretty cool getting her cleaned up and rekindled after her 15 year retirement.

Had to start from scratch as there was no chimney in the 130 year old farmhouse I recently purchased. Somebody tore the original out during an addition previously. Built a raised tile hearth and installed a 22', class A, 8" straight up all the way, talk about draft!

Spent the last 2 months getting 7+ cord CSS for next year and will spent next winter getting 3 times that much.

I have learned a lot reading here and look forward to continuing to tap the wealth of knowledge of this group.

Ah, the Defiant. Slept 10' from one of those growing up, and my father is still burning in it! Welcome to the forum, enjoy the wood processing, and look forward to hearing more from you.

Thanks for the compliments. I kinda like to jump right into things. At the end of January all I had was the poulan and no wood. Now I have 5 saws, a stove, 7 cord of wood, a trailer, and a splitter. Big up front investment, but should break even by the time my little bit of oak is ready(not accounting for time and Motrin bill). No propane used since the first fire was lit.

Welcome!!! I was about to call for PICs, but Ray beat me to it. Your woodpile is awesome! Is that Disney World in the background?!

Real nice hearth you got there too. The Defiant is cool in a retro way, but hang around here for a while and you might get the itch for one of those pretty ones you can see the fire in the window.. at least that's what is happening to me. :p

Don't bother counting the cost of the equipment vs. the savings on oil, just cut to the chase and agree with us that it's cheaper no matter how much you spend! :cool:

Welcome to the forum. As I am sure you know there is a wealth of info/advice on the old VC stoves in the Classic stove room.

Doesn't look like Disneyworld to me. Looks like a grain elevator. A big one.

Pyro I am drooling over that woodpile. Good on you for getting ahead of the game As you've probably discovered while lurking, this place is a wealth of knowledge. Also good for a few laughs along the way + some wonderful stories, anecdotes, etc as well Resurrecting that old stove is very cool IMHO.
 
Honestly not sure what's in those silos, I think it's chemicals. Railroad is right there. The grain elevator is about 1000' to the right... Or another about 3 miles to the left.

It would be nice to see the fire, but the stove has too much sentimental value to replace, plus it sweats me out of my 2300 square feet in any weather so it's doing a good job. I have the original fire screen if I have to watch, albeit at a reduced heating capacity. I'm pretty satisfied with just feeling the fire for now.

Welcome its good to see another Michigander here ! That is a nice looking install pyro. Be carefull of that Dennis guy he might try to get you a milk crate for that splitter too !

Oh cripes...I didn't see he was from Michigan. I thought the web site had it's quota of "those" type of people and weren't allowing anymore on the site?

What a joy to hear a new member of this forum looking to get a few years ahead on his wood supply. In addition to that, this new chap also knows how to set up a splitter for splitting! We might have to send you a nice milk crate to sit on while splitting though but you have to supply the cushion. ;)

Those silos no doubt are full of corn or beans and not chemicals. Nothing to be concerned about for sure and they will get filled every year.

I'm betting you have your own woodlot for cutting. Great! If you've lurked around the Wood Shed, you'll no doubt see that many of us recommend to be 3 years ahead on the wood supply. Sounds like you are well on your way. Congratulations and we're happy to have you on this forum.
