We've begun the process of removing the old zc fireplace and replacing it with an alcove and free standing wood stove. This will be our primary heat source when it's finished. Still deciding on the stove, probably going to be a Jotul F55 or Kuma WC. We're also busy picking out rock for the walls and raised hearth.

I will be doing most if not all the work myself and this forum has been an great source of information. Wanted to say thanks and share a couple of pics of the progress.

Demo baby demo, that room is going to look waay bigger when you get done, I like the alcove look

Bring dynamite and a crane, blow it up and build it over again...

That's an ambitious project. Hope all goes well, and let us know from time to time how it's progressing. Rick

Room will be so much nicer with an alcove stove. You're gonna go "Dang! It feels warm in here!"

LOL.. I remember them days.. Once you start tearing that drywall down.. it's full steam ahead!!

PICTURES.. Take lots of pictures... may come in handy later.

That will be a nice improvement. Is it going to be an alcove install? And what's up with the stack of top plates and the header on the right?

Yes it will be an alcove. The garage trusses are sitting on that wall and I know what your're thinking, fortunately those trusses are also supported by the back wall of the alcove.

Try to sell the old builder's box FP and air cooled chimney on CL. I got $180 for mine and was rather amazed getting that.

I'll be doing a similar project this summer, so I'll be watching.

Great start!! BTW I still love my Kuma WC

It's been a while since I posted so I thought I'd better give and update on our progress thus far:
zc fireplace and chimney torn out.
additional framing added to alcove walls along with insulation
alcove ceiling framed and insulated, chimney support box installed.
alcove ceiling covered with 1/2 micore and 1/2 durock
new raised hearth framed (2x10's), covered with 3/4 ply, 1/2 micore, 1/2 durock.
walls covered with 1/2 durock.
The hearth and alcove ceiling will be getting slate tile and the walls stone veneer.
The alcove walls will also be ventilated with 1 inch airspace to achieve proper clearance to combustibles.
The stove, after much deliberation has been ordered, the Jotul F-55. Thanks to everyone who responded to my endless questions :).

wow full steam ahead, looking great .What are you putting on the walls...opps just reread your post doh

Can't wait to see this finished. Gonna look spectacular! One suggestion. Lights. I wish i would of changed the location of mine to wash the stone better. With that much stone some can or pendant lights would really set the entire install over the top.

Looking fantastic, mtbrewr! I was amazed at all the better the original ZC fireplace was framed into the wall......
Are you using real stone, or manmade stone? I did a TON of real stone veneer inside and outside my house. here's a link to my install on the living room fireplace, https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/building-the-hearth-for-my-napoleon-nz3000-what-a-quest.74273/

Have you done stone before? I have some detailed pics of my stone, and substrate, in the thread above. If you need any pointers, throw me a line. I love doing stonework!

Keep the pics coming of your progress. I LOVE a good project, and I'd say you've got a great one in process!

Looks great; can't wait to see final pics. Awesome work!
