Another 6 cords - big oak and ash

Hauled home another 6 cords, with a lot of 30" oak and 36" ash rounds. This adds to the 4 cords of 42" ash and 48" oak already stacked in the driveway waiting to be split.

Time to finally buy a splitter, I think. Anyone know if TSC is doing any sale on the Huskee-22?

I hope you have a splitter....yesterday i was splitting some oak rounds that have been cut for a couple of months and it was not easy at all!
 
Right at my limit...I reuse to go over 50 inch again! ;)

Yep, the White Oak can be pretty tough sleddin' without power, especially the limb and the crotch on the bottom. <> Might be able to get the Ash for the most part with just a maul...

I went thru 5.5 cords last year, and ran out of wood on or around March 7. At least 1.5 cords of that was poplar (burns near as fast as paper!), and the oak and walnut in those stacks was poorly seasoned. I hope to get thru the full year next year, with 6 cords of better-seasoned hardwood.

As to where I got it... two 100-year storms one year apart! There is so much wood down here, I'm still driving past piles of downed ash and oak on an almost daily basis.

Normally, I think you're right, but I'll have to post some photos of the 42" two-pith ash rounds I have! Both of the big ash I brought home (one I felled, the other was Sandy damage) were two-trunk trees, so everything in the crotch area is a mess to split. Kept stalling the 22-ton Iron and Oak splitter I had borrowed to tackle some of it last fall!
 
Joful- Go to tractor supply find the manager and ask for the $999 price. Its worth a try, and worked when I did it. Regular price is $1099, good luck

Great score. Once you get ahead and get some good seasoned oak you will burn less the when you were burning poplar. I mistakenly pick up poplar once and I still cringe when I put it in my fire pit.

You are correct about the amount of free wood left behind from the recent storms, I have a coupe of guys less then 10 miles from my home that will have downed oak available for the next couple of years.
 
Most definitely find the manager at TSC and make an offer. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
 
I went to a local TSC and offered them $1000 out the door on a new 22 ton Huskee and they took it. The hydraulic lines had some cracking from being outside so that is why the manager said okay. I can't imagine being without my splitter now.......worth every penny.

Our local TSC seems to be moving quite a few of these since the two hurricanes, judging by the number of shiny new Huskee 22-tonners I see bei g towed behind cars and pickups lately. But like you said, nothing ventured...

I guess I need to get over there during business hours? What's my angle? Never tried bargaining with a retailer on good product / not like someone else is selling one cheaper.

I simply asked the manager when they would be on sale next, he said in a few weeks, but he would honor that price now. Another 100 bucks aint nothing. A lot of these stores aren't too different than a car dealer. Its all about moving the freight. If your worried about getting turned down, stalk the manager, find out his working hours, ect... if he gets a sunday off, go on a saturday night, maybe he'll be in a good mood. Good luck!
 
Don't know if you have a Menards around there but they were running a deal for 899 then 200 back in a gift card for a 22 ton. But what I understand from a guy I talked to today that looked at them the Huskee's are much heavier built but it may give the bargaining tool. Or you could look at them and see what you think. If all else fails just tell the manager you know they run them on sale for 999.00 and you would like to spend your money at TSC instead of shopping.
 
I saw the Husky 22 ton,on line last week for $999, just looked, now is $1049
 
Thanks, guys! I'll give it a try. Gotta ask when they'll be on sale next.

If you really want one......1099...999.........that's only a couple tanks of gas in your vehicle. ;)
 
Well, thanks to the excellent suggestions I received here, I called the local TSC and spoke with the manager. He said no problem on giving it to me for their "sale price" of $999, even though there was no active sale. So, I went this evening and picked one up. Done deal! Thanks, guys.

hah... had to go right from Tractor Supply to church tonight to help them clean up one of their camp buildings for a big event this weekend. Was dark when I got home!

It looks like the one in the advertisement. ;lol
 
Nice joful! You'll be blowing through that wood for sure. Action pics are always encouraged with the new splitter.
