Feeling the Heat

Father in law just had this stove installed. Their house is attached to ours so I will be doing the maintaining.

It is running on low and I am surprised how low the flame height is. The flame almost never leaves the pot. The feed adjuster is open all the way. Is this typical?

Stove is installed in basement with an OAK.

It will continue to operate on low to see how long a full hopper lasts and see if the feed rate is correct. I estimate it should last abt 26 hours on low.

I like the simplicity of this unit compared to my Mt Vernon.

I will get pictures uploaded.

on low thats pretty normal..the pot is fairly deep.

imacman...I emailed the dealer. His response was

If the feed rate is open, most likely it’s the pellet brand or the size of the pellets. They are burning at a faster rate than it can deliver them.

as long as the unit stays running you are ok, if it burns itself out then you may need to manipulate the airflow a bit.

There are times it looks like it is about to burn out. When you say manipulate airflow, is there a draft adjustment or another setting not mentioned in the manual?

if you remove the ash pan, there is a rectangular hole in the bottom of theunit, with a piece of sheet metal held in with a single screw just behind it. if you loosen the screw, you can rotate the piece of metal to partially obstruct the hole. this will reduce the air moving through the machine. I do not suggest doing this for funsies. do this only if the unit burns itself out. have you run the unit at different levels to see how it runs across the spectrum?

Hi BIH as per the manual, adjust the flame height on high heat setting, flame typically active 4-8 inches out of burnpot. On low, I'm thinking its fine if it supports itself and does not go out. It sounds like she is doing fine. Good luck.

Sounds about normal.. On low mine only crests the pot occasionally. (Quad/same basic design).

The PS-35 is more along the lines of the Santa Fe. On Low it will do a pretty good job, but running on Med, with gate closed some, will give a higher convection fan speed and setup a better convective loop and keep the pot cleaner (more air).

I only run my Quad on Low. But it's a bigger unit (47,500 BTU compared to 30-35,000) and its low is comparable to the Med setting on the Castile, Santa Fe, PS-35

Thanks for the responses. It has a good flame on med and high. I ran a bag through on low and the feed rate seems about right.

After the initial bag I cleaned and there was just a small clinker about the size of a quarter in the ash pan.

I really do like this stove so far.

Thanks again

Have the cab50 which is identical minus capacity.

On low my flame rarely pops above the pot. Never has died on low.

Do not mess with the air flow thingy under the ash pan. I don't think the manual even mentions it as adjustable.

Runs med 80% of time, high 10% and low 10.
