Sure looks like one of my favorites.........does it have a olive-ish scent to it?

Bark don't look quite right, bit I'm saying locust.....

Well, the Hackberry and Walnut were correct... the mystery wood was .................... MULBERRY !!!! :p

Looked like red oak, then when my chain started biting through it.. YELLOW chips were flying! I have NO tree ID skills! I say mulberry because 4 different people that saw it today called it that. It was as yellow as hedge on the inside!!

You are correct sir. Very nice score. Just watch the sparks when you burn the mulberry. You got three pretty good woods there and I would not be upset that you ended up with mulberry at all.

I heard that walnut was marginal at best for firewood?

Granted it was FREE, and all wood will burn, I'm just trying to figure out which woods to focus on when I have that choice.

Thanks!

Don

Walnut burns nice and clean and has a great aroma. Smells great on the pile too. I take all I can get.

I have several cord of walnut, I love that stuff. Especially the smell of it both cutting and burning. Smells like fine furniture when you cut it, and has a nutty smell when burning......

I liken the walnut to ash when burning. Has similar burn and ash characteristics.

Only complaint I have against walnut is lots of ash. Other than that it burns good, coals good, splits easy, and smells very good when burning. I don't turn it away, I burned about 1/2 cord or so this winter. Ok maybe one more minor complaint, some of it the bark makes a hell of a mess.
