Another wood ID ?

I'm gonna go with Sassafras. Does it smell good?

I was thinking maybe Walnut but I believe Knots may have it...sass

If it is fresh cut - walnut.

I say walnut, but I really have no idea, lets see if I'm right......lol

Red elm might be right, not familiar with it.

I don't think it's Walnut, Sass or Red Elm....but no help as to what it is.

Black Walnut. Those cookies show it all.

Certainly not cottonwood. Definitely black walnut with the classic center wood and that bark. I cut a lot of that and while walnut in old orchards around Gilroy when I lived in California. Walnut is waaaaay better than c-wood (medium heat, about the same as elm or ash) and smells good when burned. Too bad they are not long millable lengths, that looks like really nice heartwood.

That ain't black walnut. I don't know what it is, but this ole boy has a crapload of walnut, and that stuff ain't it.

I'm not great at wood id, but I'd have to agree. Black walnut around here has a bark very similar to ash(minus the EAB holes). That bark looks way too gnarly to be walnut to me. Not sure what it is, but pretty sure what it isn't.

Whack a piece of it open and post a picture of the grain so we can tell!

I saw this last night, and based on other wood ID'S on here I was thinking some sort of Elm; I rarely get Elm here but some other similiar pictures from the past the fellas here said were Elm so I'm "guessing" that is what it is.

I also don't think it is Black Walnut, just doesn't look right, and I get a LOT of that here. It's not Sassy either.....

Split it open and let's see the grain!

My guess is Mulberry on the top and possibly a few pieces of locust on the bottom.

Those 2 cookies on top center & top left are Black Walnut, I don't give a chit what anyone says. Don't tell me what it ain't, and then say" but I don't know what it is".

Bark looks like red elm to me, but I want to see a split of it......give it the redneck "sniff" test. If its walnut, your nose will confirm it. Walnut has a "fine furniture" smell to it. Split a piece and smell it.......let us know what you find.....

Don't quite look like the walnut I've cut, the annual rings weren't pronounced in the heartwood as the rings are in your wood.

Looked at it again and magnified it real good-my conclusion is "mish-mosh"! I see the cookies that Hog is talking about on top and yes they do look like Walnut, but I don't see any rounds that look like that. Looks like you have a very small split of Locust, possibly Honey, and a round of Black down near the bottom? I also can see how it might look like Mulberry but doesn't quite fit that either. Like I said I don't get Elm here for some reason but the color of the cutside looks like what these guys I.D. as Elm......I don't know WTF some of it is now........

Please whack a round into splits and post that picture before we all go more nuts....

Black locust. Possibly black locust AND walnut, and a stick of something else.

I do see a piece of black locust in there, so its definitely a mixed load.......
Split the bigger rounds on top and give 'em a sniff......dammit, the suspense is killing us here!
