I had a '87 ranger with 298K miles that refused to die. It spent a lot of time riding on the bump stops too. Brakes were fine, but you had to get DEEP into second gear pulling up steep hills. It was like being in a truck pull except I had 80 HP instead of 800.

I hauled a bunch of ceramic floor tiles once...enough that I decided I had too much on the bed and loaded up the passenger side floorboard to balance things out a bit (and I loaded the bed all the way toward the cab). I refused to make that second trip even though it was only a 20 minute drive round trip.

Those are good old trucks.
