Northern MI - in the mitten
Been seeing a little color the last few days, and noticed this one and another with even more leaves turning. You may need to zoom to see the leaves. Pretty much middle of pic.
Our lone Birch is also starting. Seems early to me.
Is this a sign that winter will be early or very cold?
All the ferns started about a week ago.

Not as cold as you are, I suspect, but we're hitting 50's overnight now. The walnuts are dropping leaves pretty steady, the last few days. Won't be long now!

I still have two holes in my house, where there should be windows. I also haven't yet gotten my two old exterior doors weather-stripped (planning to do interlocking metal style), and I have SIX 240 year old windows without storms right now! !!! <>

Uh oh, better get crackin' there, bud. Winter will sneak up on you before you know it.>>
We've gotten a few nights around 48-50 already, and the highs have recently stayed in the low to mid 70's for the most part.
We had about 4-5 days of 90's last month and that's been the worst of the heat this year.
Waiting for the tractor repair so I can start getting the shed filled.
Too much to do.

Yeah... I know it! Been cracking... but on all the wrong stuff. Too many irons in the fire, lately.

Dave, that is very common at this time of the year. We've got several leaves turning even on the soft maples. I gave my wife a pure red one a few days ago that fell from a sassafras. When we lived near Gaylord, there were several places along M-32 east of Gaylord where by mid August they would be 75% turned already. Some on the west side too but mostly on the east. Also if you look in the swampy places it is very common for most of the trees to turn color in August whether it is wet or dry. Happens every year.

we all can only hope for a nice cold snowy winter not icy just snowy:)

I noticed that in your neighborhood over the weekend, Dave.

I was hoping I could make a small fire in the newly installed stove there, but not quite yet. Maybe in a couple of weeks.

8 weeks till frost from the date you hear the first Cicada is what I've always heard. I heard the first one here July 19. Soooo frost in Mid Sept. That would be a drag down here. The little Maples in the swamps here start showing a little red at the end of July every year. I've see a bit of orange on the big ones too. Don't know about early or cold winter, but I sure do like 70's rather than 90's. A C

90's are a drag. This weather is agreeable till fall.

My paper birch is tuning and dropping leaves, has been for the last two weeks. I thought the same. In the 11 years I lived here I don't remember it happening this early. My maple is dropping on the very top but no other changes yet. My two Bradford pear trees are usually the last to change and drop. Driving around during a windy day last week it seemed like a lot of colored leaves blowing around. Sign, trend, anomaly I don't know but either way this year just seems much different then the last few.

Saw a couple of red Black Tupelo leaves the other day but I don't think fall will be here for a while. Not ready for that yet....

It's weird how it happens. One day it's warm and the next you wake up and there's some bite in the morning air. I'm ok with this weather. September will come very quickly now.

Had a small morning kindling fire a couple days ago.
Didn't really need it, just wanted to, and it was a little cool, so I did.
I expect the burning to start in about 7 weeks.

First fire is always fun.

My neighbor's White Birch has been dropping leaves for weeks now. They turn yellow and come down like rain at times. No other color here yet. There is a definite change in the air. It's gone down into the 50s a few nights.

I have noticed leaves turning for about a week! _g Not quite ready for cold just yet.

I have a feeling summer has a little more fight left in her. She's not going away just yet without some more hot days.

Awfully warm outside this evening... was just out doing some work on the patio. Much warmer than any other night in the last week or more.

I go camping in the Adirondack mountains every year around early August for most of the past 25 years and noticed the sugar maples begin to show some red in the leaves around that time. We had a morning in the mid-40s and boy it felt nice after the hot July we had in s jersey. I also wish some of those rock maples grew down here.

Please send some of that cooler weather down here.... Its 85 and 75% humidity at 10PM...ahhh good ole August heat.

I know what you mean, the humidity has been ultra high here lately. I was splitting wood, sitting on a stump, soaking my clothes like i just went through a shower. But its beautiful this morning.
