One winter a few years back we fell and cut up a huge red oak down in Maryland. It was around 40 in. across. We used mauls and wedges. Wet red oak splits pretty good. The bad part was none of us payed any attention to the vine running the length of the tree. Needless to say, in a couple of days we were all covered with poison ivy from the saw dust. We all went to the doctor for steroids for the poison. The wood burnt good but the poison itched like heck. :red:

Jeffrey pine tree rounds in the sierra just outside of mammoth. we could get about 4-5 of these in my 4wd nissan and they just barely fit sideways. Would roll em down the mountain and cripes if you were in the way forget it. Can not remember how we got em in the truck, probably just grunt work and plenty of sweat. They split real easy cause they were pine, the only wood in the area. Got forest permits and would get 4-5 chords so we could ski bum the season away on paultry pay. Best years of my life, don't tell my wife I said that though.
