Cascade Failure

Feeling the Heat

A couple years ago I was doing great getting ahead. And then, due to family circumstances, I slacked off on my firewood gathering duties. I was able to cut, split (most of it) and piled in the woods but couldn't get the wood to the house and stacked.

Things have improved drastically and in the past two weeks I have hauled and stacked about four cords out of the woods. Four cords with a WIDE moisture range. This winter is going to suck. Next year's wood will be stacked in the next few weeks so no problem there.

Lesson learned....

Such is life. Just make sure you keep the chimney brush handy and give her a few extra trips up on the roof this winter to make sure things stay safe.

Sounds like you have the opportunity to get ahead again!

I'm glad you started this confession thread for I have sinned as well and I can't keep it bottled up inside any longer.
I, too, have been feeling a lot of stress that my stacks aren't growing as quickly as I had hoped they would this summer. The angst finally got the better of me a couple of day ago when I saw this by the side of the road. I wondered if maybe the power company or the county had cut it, knowing that the wood belonged to the property owner, but at that point I was so overwrought that I frankly didn't care. The house was at the end of a long driveway and I figured that I could get out of there quick and disappear if I saw anyone coming. If I was spotted, I knew I could always fall back on the old "That's a county right of way, next to the road" excuse, and play dumb if accused of anything. I grabbed it and gunned it on out of there in a cloud of dust. The guilt has been mounting, and I almost took better wood back over there in the dead of night to replace what I had taken....but my hoarding instincts would not let me do that. I feel just terrible that I have sunk to such depths, and violated the wood burner's cardinal rule: "Never grab another man's wood." :(

Since we are bearing all here, it has been 17 months since I have brought a stick of firewood home;sick Not sure if it is coincidence but I have put on almost 20 lbs in the same period.

Well if we're all going to confessional . . .

I haven't been cutting wood as I have in the past . . . but I have a good excuse . . . I no longer have access to the land where I was cutting and I have picked up a couple of scrounges -- albeit pine, poplar, white birch and a small amount of hardwood and in my defence I have this year's and next year's wood in the woodshed already and 2015-2016 wood stacked outside and about half of 2016-2017's wood . . . but that said I will admit I have not cut, split or stacked the scounged wood even.

Am I a bad person?

Do I need to say three Hail Marys? And if so . . . I might need some help since I'm not even Catholic.

See that's why I like being Lutheran. If you feel guilty about something you just bring extra food to the pot luck.

OK . . . so an extra dish it is . . . anyone up for my infamous black walnut sawdust casserole?

Guess it's my turn to confess.
I have a truck load of rounds sitting on the ground for the past two weeks waiting to get split and stacked. Plus, I have about four more loads to get for this years wood. I have done nothing in the way of preparing for this winter for awhile.
My reasoning? It's fishing season.
I keep telling myself, I'll do some before I go to work tomorrow, or, I'll do it on the weekend.
For sure this weekend though. I promise.
Saturday is for fishing, and a campfire at night. Sunday will be splitting/stacking wood, then, out to get two loads.

I have sawdust and woodchips all over my backyard that I have neglected to clean up. I did get a tarp to cut and split on to help keep things from getting worse at least.

Its contagious... I keep looking for scrounged wood, even though I still have wood from a red oak i cut in my back yard that needs to be brought out of the woods and split. I already feel better!

;lol;lol;lol
had a good laugh reading all of these posts......very good thread. Well, I have done my part so far this year and am in good standing with the church in regards to my firewood hoarding.....I cut a TON of wood this year, and I kept and processed around 10 cord of it for my own addiction, my buddy has hoarded the other 10 cord that we've cut.......I still have 2 cord to stack, but it's all split, and all of this wood is for 3-4 years down the road so I'm good for a long, long time.

HOWEVER, I hope it's not a gluttony sin that I have TONS more to cut this summer, fall and winter......it's not that I am being greedy with my firewood, but I DO have a maple syrup season coming up in February......::-)

I too have sinned. Last year I ran out of seasoned wood and dipped into some EAB killed ash that was only CSS for about 4 months. It was marginal at best. I had about 1.5 cord of maple that was nowhere near ready so i let that be. At least I had pellets.

This winter will be better, and all worries should be put to the wayside for 14/15.

My turn - several cord of walnut & cherry on the ground, <3 miles from my house, I have permission to cut it, and I haven't been back since March. I did clean out the BL, though :)

Forgiveness can be difficult but we are advised to forgive. You guys are forgiven but please remember this does not give you a free hand to duplicate the sin! ;)
It's tough to be good when you got that 'Get out of Jail Free' card in your pocket. ;lol

I did clean out the BL, though :)
That's my motto; Sweep the BL first! ==c That's why I'm grabbing it now, instead of stacking Ash at the relatives' like a good boy. ;em

I too have sinned and offended the firewood gods. I have a truckload of hickory and cherry the were too gnarly to split by hand so they have been sitting on the ground all summer. I have been meaning to borrow my buddy's splitter but work is crazy. I swear I'll get it done soon. Figures it's been a wet summer too.

I have about 14 cord split and stacked but I did a BAD thing......left 6 in the round that needs split still. Haven't split any since May except about a cord 2 weeks ago and gave to a guy from church. So if I were Catholic that may be pentence enough but I am not so I will just have to count on grace at this point.

I too have failed in my obligation. I was over 2 years ahead but did nothing this summer. I now have only this years wood and about half of 14/15.

Finding the time is such a problem that I'm actually considering buying :)eek:) some to get 14/15 done and give me some breathing room so I can wait for better scores.

Does it make me a wood snob that I get chills at the though of burning wood that's only seasoned a year?

once the kiddos get older they'll probably enjoy time processing with you, I know mine do....
so, that said, you have our permission to 'bite the bullet' and buy some wood to get you topped off for next year....but you better get it soon before those fall prices start to climb!
