Can't See-- Sweat!

When doing what?

Assuming you're talking about using the chainsaw... I picked up a Husqvarna feller's helmet a while back for like $35. I figured I'd use it for felling, after one of our regular hearth.com members was damn near killed by a falling branch, while felling. I found it works so great, and is so much easier to don than glasses and ear plugs, that now I use it anytime I'm cutting. No glasses to sweat / fog, I'm protected, and it has those nice integral earmuffs that just pop into place.

I still wear safety glasses (dark ones on sunny or overcast days,clear ones at early morning/late evening or working indoors) over my OSHA approved impact resistant prescription glasses.Keeps them from getting scratched up,at $4 each,they're a helluva lot cheaper than a new pair of bifocals. Except on a few extra humid days they never fog up.Corded washable earplugs for ear protection.


When felling its the forestry helmet w/mesh faceshield,safety glasses underneath.No hearing protection because I always am looking up,especially with the big or dangerous ones,& I want to hear the sound of the saw & any cracking etc when it starts tipping over....

How to keep sweat out of safety glasses?! Don't work so hard.

I'm finally learning that,even on cooler less humid days.I take more breaks than 3-4 years ago for sure.Dont try to do it it all in one day anymore.

It's a 2 step process. Step 1 = get 3 years ahead on wood. Step 2 = stop cutting in the middle of summer.
Too bad for me I always have friends call with a tree down in their yard in sticky July. No calls this summer though. I guess it's not hot enough
There's anti-fog stuff for safety glasses. It kinda works.

I'm 4 years ahead in wood & still spend 2-3 days per month in the woods year round.Only time I stay away is thunderstorms/lightning,strong winds,temps over 90 & when snow is over 3"- 4" deep.

Dew rag / headband? I can't really stand to wear them personally.

I like a ball cap, keeps the sun glare off my perscription safety glasses, but it holds in the head heat, also deflects dust & flying chips. Just have to take frequent breaks & wipe down with a face towel. Glasses SUCK for attracting dust, dirt, sweat, etc, but it's way better than not seeing at all.

For general fogging issues, I have always had the best luck cleaning with Windex, rinsing with very warm to hot water and lightly drying with a soft cotton towel, t-shirt, etc. Microfiber cloths work well too. I use this method on my regular glasses, safety glasses, goggles & face shields for work with great results. I am also very anal about keeping the car windshields and my sled helmet shields extremely clean with windex.

Humidity will rapidly form into fog on any surface that has other contaminants on it such as dust, smoke, etc. Ever notice how on a dewy night a dirty car will be covered in droplets but a clean freshly washed car will be nearly dry? I see this every day at work. Our parking lot is immediately next to a cooling tower that evaporates 100,000 gal per day.

Wait till winter.. Beyond that the helmet with out safety glasses it has a nice mesh screen.

I never wear glasses with my helmet. That's why I recommended the helmet.

I don't have the luxury of picking when I cut wood. This year I did it all in February because that's when I was offered a large stack of machine piled logs. February weather is usually miserable - wet, cold, windy - but I lucked out this year with decent work weather. I still got sweat in my eyes.

I get tired of wearing safety glasses (have to do it every damm day at work, all day, along with earplugs and a hardhat). So (don't scold me fellas) I usually don't wear 'em outside of the workplace.......
My ball cap keeps the sweat out of my eyes, which needs washed once a week (if not more) but keeps that burning salty sweat from getting into my eyes...that's worse than sawchips IMO...

I DO wear a helmet when doing a risky felling job.....if I look up in the tree and it's got dead branches and such, the helmet goes on......

Saw too many "accidents" come into the ER. Those eye don't grow back. You reck them, they are gone. Ignore a bit of something in your eye, even a simple scratch can lead to the loss of that eye if not promptly taken care of. Just say'in.

I got stabbed in the eye today... and I was wearing safety glasses! Sore, seeing blurry, but not blind.

In related news, I'm about this close (fingers an inch apart) to removing the damn ROPS from my tractor. Damn thing does nothing but catch (and break) tree branches.

I got stabbed a few times this morning also,but it was by multiflora rosa & prickly ash thorns.Little bastards can really be painful.

Yep, I learned that a couple summers back welding caps on corner posts...ended up with a metal splinter in one eye.
Just last month a buddy of mine had a small limb out of a fence and it came back and hit him in the face...broke his safety glasses and sent him to the ER. If he wasn't wearing them he would have lost his eye.

Bandana or 80's style sweatband and some anti-fog safety glasses will do the trick........ or the helmet shield system

I find that a bandana/headband works much better than a ball cap for controlling the sweat. Also takes me back to my youth. However, I like the bill and bald-spot protection of a cap. Might have to get a helmet.
