I might purchase a Jotul F400 that is in good shape. We have a ranch style house with 7.5' ceilings. Stove will be in dinning room. Dinning room, kitchen and living room are really like one large 1300 sq/ft room. Bedrooms are off the kitchen, along a hallway. Our old wood stove (Waterford Erin (e) heated the Dinning, kitchen and livingrooms just fine. Can we expect the same from a F400 purchased in 2000? Going to look at the Jotul tonight...

I would guess it would perform about the same.

I have a Jotul F500 and about 2000+ sq ft of heatable space. The stove your considering is a good size stove, I'm not sure of the firebox size off the top of my head but folks who have them say good things about them. Secondary combustion, overnight burns that hold coals well into morning and a good look to them. Take a quick peek at jotuls website and look at the specs for the Castine. I think the square footage in your home will be well in the limits of the Castine

Ok,

I found a pdf file online for dbl door f400 gave a high rating of 35,000 BTU which sounds low to me but....

Where are you located? The F400 heated our old 2000 sq ft in a milder climate. It will do the job. You may not get overnight burns always, but I think it will match the Waterford in performance. I'm not sure about the Erin e's capacity, but the Erin 90 is rated at 10-33K btus, max output 45K btus. The Jotul F400's rated max is 55K btus. If the price is right and it is in very good condition, then you should do ok. If the intent is to burn 24/7 and greatly exceed the Erin's capacity on the coldest nights then go up to a Jotul F500 or other ~2 cu ft stove.

We have a similar layout and square footage, and our castine performs well. With the help of 1 fan on the floor at the end of the hall blowing the cool air toward the stove room, everything was nice and toasty. The firebox if memory serves me is 1.8 - but on really cold windy nights, a larger stove would be ideal. Again, like the op said, location and how cold your typical winters are will play a role.
