For an hour today after work my buddy (pictured) and I finally started tackling a 4' wide silver maple courtesy of hurricane Sandy. We mainly limbed most of the top and limbed another silver and just made the working area safe to cut in, as there is a lot of limbs and saplings about. We cut around 15 rounds in the process and plan on hitting the trees full throttle in the coming week.

I just had a huge silver maple taken down last week, it was starting to invade my septic system. I kept some of the wood but told the tree guy to take most of it, not sure if it was worth keeping since it burns so fast and I have limited space.

That will make for some good daytime burning - congrats.

These 2 will take some time. Splitter will come back after this big guy is bucked. No way these rounds are gonna be movable.

Noodle them things, even a wedge to split em should work. This thing grew in the woods so the trunk should be easy to split.

I may enter a round into the "most splits from a round" contest BogyDave came up with in Scotty's 29 splits in 1 oak round post.

I think I'm a strong runner in that contest if last year counts. Got 76 splits from a 44" pin oak round

I wish I would've counted how many splits I got out of that red oak I did in June....the trunk was around 42-44" across, not just at the stump but the whole damm trunk, up to around 20'! I filled my truck clear up to the top of the cab roof with just a couple of those rounds.....I should've kept track on how many I got out of each round. It had to be around 45 or more.....

I'll hopefully be getting down to that part of the tree in the next week. But like Dave said, we need rules. Id have over 1000 pcs if it were split into kindlin. ;)

I made those splits in the "29" thread all around 5x5" to 6x6"......that's usually what I split my oak at, being it has 3 to 4 years to season.....
I'd say anywhere from 4x4" to 6x6" should be fair, as a guideline......

Here's two big boy Silver Maples I had a friend take down here with a bucket truck. We did one a day... I kept the wood except for the 8 foot trunks , loaded with hardware.. Gave me a two year wood supply! Noodled a lot as well...

Nonsense, silver maple is a fine wood. I have no idea why it gets such a bad rap. I admit it wasn't my favorite wood before the BK but with the BK it provides nice 24 hour burns in the shoulder season and I could use it all winter long if I needed to. I rank it even with Cherry, most people love burning Cherry.

You may be right, but with somewhat limited space for firewood, I wasn't gonna waste it on silver maple!

I was saying a two year wood supply from both trees... And you were right , just about 5 cords per tree... If it were Oaks I'll bet they would have lasted me 3 years.. Burning some 2 year old wood from those trees this year, so maybe it will even give me some better heat...less wood burned..plus I burned into June this past year... crazy weather..

They were average splits for what I burn. Mostly 4" I'll find a pic when I get back, I'm down in KY for the weekend
