When it rains, it pours. Saw more tree service trucks near the house on the way home, they had a full dump truck full of mostly red oak they seemed happy to part with. They dropped it right in my driveway, which as you can see is now basically gone. First pic is from the first dump before I cleared the sidewalk, second pic is after a smaller second dump and rearranging. A lot more than I wanted all at once (I'm roughly estimating 2-3 cords), but I can't seem to pass up free wood. It's a sickness. We'll see how long until the neighbors get out the torches. I believe my wife's exact response was, "Seriously!?".
The driver tried to negotiate a price other than free with me after he dumped the load; I'll be charitable and assume it was a misunderstanding. Gave him a 20 for his time anyway.
There were a few large logs of what sure looked like beech (smooth gray bark, white wood, too large to be young maple) in there too, but the grain looks just like oak with all those prominent holes/rays. I've never seen beech with grain like that before; in Michigan it's been much more uniform, but maybe that's because those logs were seasoned before I split them.
