If I miss a nail, I usually sweep my ashes with a retrieving magnet. A friend of mine made a nail retriever out of magnets from inside old large computer hard drives.

I have a company I used to work for that I can get pallets from, but they are not what most would think of when you say pallet. They are 8'-14' long and 2'-4' wide. made of hardwood 4x4'sor doubled up 2x4. They get all their sheet steel shipped in on them. I find it to be a PITA to work with. removing the nails is near impossible they are toe nailed together and the nails are like 5" long. am I missing out on something here. Why is it wrong to burning the nails? I spread my ashes in my woods long after they have cooled.
shawn nothing wrong with burning the nails as long as you have no worrys with the nails in the ashes, sounds like a good deal for you.
I stumbled upon this video on lumberjocks. It is of a really neat tool to rip apart pallets
I didnt think it took all that long to cut the pallet up. Ran the circular saw up the stringers cutting the slats, split the slats into smaller pieces for kindling. The stringers will be cut into chunks. Not sure if i will keep the nails in the stringers or not, but all i know is i got a full milk crate of kindling from one pallet.. A few more, and i should be set for winter.

Nothing wrong with burning the nails, I don't try to remove the nails, to much work , I just dump my ashes in my woods, or fire pit

My dad made a patio table out of redwood 2x4s that was in a pallet more than 50 years ago. It sits on my deck, and looks like when he made it. A tornado hit in 1988 and broke a leg. I had to repair it with pressure treat, then stain it. Can't find redwood like that anymore.
I know what that purple wood is, Jake. I just can't think of the name right now.

FWIW, this particular mahogany pallet had something shipped on it that went to a now defunct auto parts factory. They made all sorts of tubing type parts. Maybe a piece of machinery came on it? Who knows, it was nearly 75 years ago, which makes this table twice as old as me.
Just another example of "they don't make 'em like they used to"

I have seen a lot of pallets used to make walls for composting bens, and for pig pens. You also see them used a lot for walkways during spring mud season.
Woo hoo! While out today on break. I saw a huge pile of pallets in back of a tile place. Got back to work and figured the polite thing to do would be to call the place and ask if I could scrounge the pallets. I called and was told I could take as many as want anytime I want... It pays to ask......
This load will be used to make a new wood box up on my deck. I don't want to be stomping through the snow during a storm to get more wood..... Lol

Pallet wood? Here is what I cut up today. It is mostly oak
