Hearth pad question

I've seen all kinds of prices on hearth pads for a pellet stove. Most are out of tile or stone so I was wondering if I could just make one with cement backer board and then tile over that or is there more to a stove pad than that?

You could but you would have to put plywood under the wonder board. The wonder board is not rigid enough on it's own.
