Found a regency I1200 for practically nothing. Home owners bought the house and it was just set in the chimney and never used. It had no flu liner hooked up or anything. The new owner wants a open fireplace and wants it out of the way. I plan on getting a liner from chimney liner depot "flex king 6 in". I have never installed a insert but it does not look that difficult. Cut the damper out, put the liner down and hook up and install the cap. Im sure their is a little more but i think i can handle it. If any one has any input before I start the install let me know.

What your planning on installing it in makes a big difference.
Post some info and photos.
If it is cheap prefab, the insert may not be a go without tearing the prefab out.
The 1200 is a small insert if I remember correctly.
What are your expectations of the insert?
Ambiance, help with heating, primary heat, occasional burning, 24/7 burning.

Most of us cut out the damper enough to get the liner down through.
Once you do that, the fireplace is no longer usable as a fireplace.

I picked up the regency today. its in great shape, heck its brand new. Ok so what your saying is i do not have to remove the whole damper just cut it big enough for the liner? the Regency with the metal suroundings looks like the insert should have legs on the back to make it sit level. Cant I just remove the lower part of the lower part of the metal trim to make it sit flush?

The surround may be adjustable, not sure on those models.
Usually the backs of insert can have bolts screwed in & out of a hole in each rear bottom near the corners to level the insert out.
Post some pics of the surround and what your talking about as far as length etc.

Re: the damper, You take the entire damper plate out, and the cut the surrounding metal around the damper framing out enough to accommodate the new liner.

Ok I got the damper out with a grinder. Not to bad just covered in soot. It was that bad. The hardest part so far has been carrying that heavy insert into the house. It does not like ill have to do any more modding to the insert to get the liner down. Does the openeing have to be exactly 6 in for the lining or can I wiggle it in?

Whatever it takes to get the liner down, and hooked onto the stove outlet.
The liner may not come straight down onto the insert outlet. That is why many other and myself cut a larger opening to make up for the angle the liner comes through at.
Your going to have to figure out where the outlet on the insert will be when in place as opposed to where the liner is dropping through the old damper area.
More times than not, it will not be a straight shot. Some even used offset boxes or 30 degree elbows.
I cut enough out that i came through and onto the insert outlet without any other additional parts.

Thank you hogwildz for your help. I have everythign ready "i think". I cut some more out with a sawzaw and now have enough room for the liner to come in easily. Now im just waiting for the liner to show up. I ordered it from chimney liner depot.com How long does it usually take to ship out. Im here in northern texas.
