True. I think the last time I saw coal for sale locally was at Cornwall Hardware in Seattle. Now both the store and coal are history.
 
My Esse cookstove came with very thick coal grates .. Never have tried coal in her.. Also a really nice deep ashpan as well.. Right now I run the deep wood box for firewood..

Remember most of the Duel stoves are designed to burn Bit coal. You can get it from western Pa. It is available if you buy a truck load. Bit coal has high BTU's but it can burn messy if you let it. How it would work is you get a wood fire going. Pile on a few big lumps of coal to extend the burn several hours. You would use both... Not just coal.
 
It depends on where it's mined. Northern Appalachian coal is highest in the country, while coal from the 4 corners area is the lowest. It is in parts per million, which doesn't mean much until you burn it in coal plants by the thousands of tons daily. Then it becomes a public health issue.
