I just saw a fantastic deal on a Lopi answer insert near my sister - I'm trying to talk her into getting it for her little creek cabin. The answer insert doesn't stick out of the fireplace much at all but she would be using it without the surround in the big masonry fireplace. Just wondered if you can cook on the back of it, figured that might really increase the appeal for her! My Lopi is a size up and has a large sort of step top thing in front (even though it's an insert) that works for cooking but I wasn't sure if this one does at all.

I had an answer as an insert. I believe the top is a hood similar to the back step-up on a liberty. Might be kind of cool to cook on.

We have a freedom insert. During power outages I've reheated pizza & made soup (canned) on ours. My orig manual showed how to make pancake & eggs on it but there is only 4-6" sticking out, perfect for what I have heated on it tho.

Yeah, that's what it looks like and you're probably right. Mine has an 11" front and is plenty big enough to cook on but the answer looks like it's more for just heating. Well, regardless it's $250 and in great shape and she should buy it (but she probably wont!) If I was nearer I'd buy it just to resell for a lot more, what the heck. Those Lopis are fabulous stoves.
