Feeling the Heat

Had some coals left, started the stove around 5 this morning, around 43 outside.

Burned it pretty hot to warm things up (650-750) with the blower fan on it.

The furthest I can usually turn it down with my oversized chimney (6 x 10 clay) is around 3/4 closed on the air control. Had it down, secondaries flaming nice and left it.

Just checked it, around half a load left (half cherry at around 18%, half fir at 25%), no flames, just coaling, temp down to around 450-500.

Looking at the chimney outside, it looks good, no smoke visible..... but I sure can smell it. The fir was a little bit punky... would that cause it? Not sure if it's always like this, I'm not usually around to check 2 hours after I light it (either at work or sleeping).

Thanks!

You will always be able to smell a fire even if you can't "see" smoke. A stove will still emit pollution but it may not be the typical smokey look.

In my stove flames only last maybe 2-4 hours depending on how I stack the wood. And then I get coals.

I don't think punky wood smells much different (in my experience). Perhaps, as you said, you are simply not familiar with the smell.

Happy burning!

Lol, this time of year we just sit and state at the clouds socking in the valley

lol. I was stacking wood out in the fog yesterday. Just down the road it was sunny. I had started our first fire a couple hours before and due to stagnant air and the fact that I was downwind I too could certainly smell the wood smoke, though none was visible.
