Everyone's always postin' up their free scores! I helped out a friend on their lot today that suffered a lot of damage from a tornado in the area in August. This was actually my first time doing this sort of thing and I am hooked. Man, I am spent and it was back breaking labor, but I have a newfound respect for you guys. I can now truly understand and appreciate the love and respect that goes into a pile of stacked firewood. I've no idea how much I came away with, but I know I filled up a 12' Penske moving truck long after I ran out of Advil.

I got some good sized rounds and a pretty decent mixture of oak, maple, hickory, cedar, apple, some pine and a few other unknowns as I am still working on my wood classification / identification.

This was by far the most satisfying feeling ever. I'll be choppin', splittin' and stackin' for the next few weekends, but am looking forward to accumulating a nice wood pile like most of you have. :)

What do you guys think? How'd I do?

For the most part, you done well. As you learn the different woods you may become a bit more selective. This does not mean you got bad wood because you did not. But you will find that some wood burns much better than others. Some wood will burn much longer than others. Some wood will split difficult and some will split easy. Don't try to learn it all at once unless you are a lot smarter than I am. Learn a bit more every year and you'll do fine. Now you have to get busy and start bucking that wood up and then splitting and stacking.

I know I need to do a lot more reading on these forums than I've already done and read about the selective process you're talking about. If I can weed out the good from the not-so-good, I'll be that much more ahead of the game.

You are right on Scott. The old saying is that it takes the same amount of time to cut good wood as it does questionable wood so why not use the time profitably. Still, even with this, most of us will cut some of the lesser woods and be happy with it. For example, I cut a goodly amount of soft maple. It can't compare with oak but even though the charts have it a ways down, it is still good wood and you can do things with it that you can't with oaks. One good reason to have some variety and we are blessed with that in our states.

As one of the fellows I used to work with would say, "You done good!". That is a respectable haul of future firewood.

As you split and stack the wood segregate the species/logs/rounds. Some will season and be ready to burn sooner - should save you from weeding through the stack later on.
If you take close up picks of each and post them while splitting the help from the forum will ID in short order.

I am not picky on wood. I cut it all up....whatever needs cutting up at neighbors and on my uncles farm. This fall I have been busy with elm and box elder. Not the best wood but it all burns.

Then again, I have plenty of room to store everything (on uncles farm). People with smaller places to store often want denser wood.

Welp, I'd say I've got a little more than half of it chopped into 15" - 18" pieces. The smaller stuff I started stackin' right away. The larger round that need to be split, I started in a separate stack. It's a pretty fair sized stash of wood. I don't know if it the photos do it any justice, but it's definitely more than I've ever had. I'm gonna rest the remainder of the day and sharpen the chain on my saw.
