Heard a grinder in the neighborhood. Wood radar went off. Neighbor was taking down two good sized ash trees. Told him I'd be happy to take "some". I think he might have heard "all". We cut at least a half-cord for his neighbor, and I've made one trip back for myself.

Quick note - the chain saw file y'all alerted me to is pure gold. The owner had a Husky 455(?) and he was making better progress pulling the saw back and forth than he was cutting. My little Husky 435 16" was cutting rounds at least 2:1.

I'm going to have some strategy issues with the big rounds. I'm not The Hulk so I may have to open a can of Issac Newton or Archimedes on their arse. >>

Here's one afternoon's take back at the house.

As an aside, turns out both local HD and Lowes have stopped giving away skids. I'll check around for other sources. Just got to keep this stuff off the ground!

Ash is great. High btu, quick seasoning and easy to split. Give those big ones a few whacks with the maul and they'll crack. Don't give up or, how about a wedge?

I get skids from the pool supply store around the corner from my house. Not the best but they work and they are FREE!!!!

great score

Just brought home another bedfull. The largest round there is 43". I know you guys are optimists... :)

Nice. Are you going to try to get the 43" one. Split it a couple of times on site.
Like your website.:)

One sweet score! Also a great lesson for the neighbor on the value of sharpening a chain!

Thank you. I need to do some updating. Myspace and then FB have all pretty much subsumed personal websites.

I've gotten almost everything in the front yard. Thank God the big stump out front had no knots. X'd the top with the saw enough to start the wedges and got it into 8ths. Did the same thing with the 43" round on the side, except I stopped at 1/4s.

I'll have to get some help with the ones on the side. Three big rounds are perfectly positioned to roll down a hill and crash into a house. They're chalked up with some big sections, but no way am I touching those without a plan and a spotter.

I feel pretty fortunate that ash isn't the heaviest stuff out there. If it was as heavy as it looks I'd be out of my league.

Thank you, Dennis. I've started to make it a habit to sharpen it at the end of the day. That short blade only takes about ten minutes since i got a system in place.
