I finally finished an old wood stove that is over 70 years old (Sierra) and repainted it and got her ready to go. Then I started pricing the cost to install pipe out of the back of the unit, through the side of my barn and then out side. Wow, I was blown away at the cost to install this stuff! The standard black pipe from the stove to the wall was only $45 at Lowes, then the through the wall kit was $291 of double wall Chimney pipe. I then had to purchase a 12" pipe ($45) to get me clearance of the gutter on the barn and then 4 more 3ft sections of double wall pipe to provide 2-3ft clearance of the highest point of my barn roof. Those 3ft sections cost $75 bucks a piece!. $681 dollars right there and then I needed to purchase some other supplies to finish the job, so I would have over $700 wrapped up in the project pretty easy. I decided to hold off for now as there are a lot of other things I would like to purchase with $700 (new hand gun, new bow, generator......) Does anyone know of any other kits that might be cheaper? I've checked just about everywhere. Menards will save about $40-50.
I also forgot the cost of cement board or sheet metal and spacers to provide heat shields for the unit in my barn. More cost :)

Can you design the system so that most of it stays within the barn? Like running it straight up from the stove thru the roof? That will knock the cost down considerably...

We thought about that, but I have a really nice attic in my barn that we store things in and I hated to have to cut through the roof. I'm still thinking about doing that though since it's in the corner.

Keep an eye on CL, sometimes you will find a cheap stove with class a pipe included, buy the package then resell the stove.

I question your stove being 70 years old, can you post some pictures of it, I was not aware that Sierra has been around that long.

As per their webpage they say 30 years: http://sierraproductsinc.net/woodstoves.htm

75$ for a three foot section is cheap. I just paid nearly double that for my class A. Heck even interior double wall is more than that.

Ha ha, I'm sorry. Sometimes my sarcasm is a little crazy :) The stove is not even close to 70 years old. We believe the stove is at least 36 years old as it has been passed down and was the stove that heated my wife's mothers house when she was younger and first got married. Her father passed away and there sat the stove in the corner of a barn and was all rusted. I sanded and refinished the glass and stove and gaskets and turned out really nice. Was gonna use it to heat my barn and it has sentimental value to both my wife and her mother.

This is what I did after figuring up the cost of going thru the wall and up on my shop. I have been petty happy. Mine is in the corner so didn't affect storage much.

Sorry to say, but a safe chimney isn't as cheap as some people would like. Whats the barn worth? I bet more than $800! Sounds really cheap to me.
