Hi, My wood burner is set up like this,( in my pole barn) Straight up with single wall ventis black pipe about 7 feet threw the ceiling and straight up into the metalbest chimney. Total length about 18ft. I have very seasoned oak and maple, Reads 15 to 18% moisture with the meter. Everything is great I can get it up to 700 degrees stove top very easily, I can cut the air way back and let her cruise at 500 or so. My question is the rutland thermometer set at 18inches above the stove top on the pipe seems to only stay at around 300 - 325 degrees no matter even if the stove top is 700 750 degrees.. Is this normal?? I would think it should go to maybe 500..

I have a brunco 150 in my basement that is hooked into the ductwork for heating the house and the pipe there can go to 700-800 in a hurry when I am starting a fire.. It usually cruise at around 400 or so.

This is my first epa stove so I just want to make sure this is normal. Thanks

If you are running correctly Flu temp never needs to exceed 300-400 ish, Will it pop above once in a while when you leave the door cracked too long, or the air all the way open, sure but that is just wasted heat. I have the same setup in my house and rarely see the flue thermometer exceed 400. At 400, after the chimney has warmed up, 12ft of class A above the 6ft of single wall in the stove room, the Chimney draws incredibly well. So My thoughts are check it a few times this season to make sure you are not getting buildup, otherwise let 'er run

I can't say on the flue temps, we've got double wall and I still can't bring myself to drill into it for a probe thermo. But, the top temps seem right on for how ours runs, although it tends to like to hang around 600/650 while cruising.
