Google Tom Lieber guitars.

Ok now I want a Kubota, a Harley, and an American Beauty Classic '10 (they're all jaw dropping, but that one really grabs me)....

What the heck is a double bottom truck?

I picked up a couple hundred board feet of old black cherry lumber from an estate sale about ten years ago fairly cheap. I believe it ended up being around $.90 a bf. It was rough sawn, gray colored and looked much like well seasoned firewood. I started planning it for an end table I wanted to make and found some really cool looking birds eye figure in about half the lumber. Some of the pieces had lots of golden flecks running through it also. I believe all of it was quarter sawn which is harder to find nowadays. Table turned out great and I still have some stashed waiting for the right project.

"The average selling price of a bird’s-eye maple log is in the range of $20,000 to $30,000 per 1,000 board feet. To put this in perspective, one double bottom truck fully loaded with the highest quality maple bird’s-eye logs would be worth in excess of $700,000. The same size load of plain hard maple logs would be worth about $3,000."

!!! I have a few trees that I think are bird's eye. If they are, not sure what kind of quality. Could be worth a few $. Imagine if I had a couple acres of top quality logs? I think I'd be really really happy...

EDIT - the bit of reading I'm doing on the above link and elsewhere seems to suggest that Ontario, Michigan and the Great Lakes area in general are hot spots for this tree. Might be worth a 2nd look when we're out cutting...?

sorry quicky post
I wouldn,t sell the farm just yet ....birdseye maple prices are nowhere near 30 0r 20 or even 10 thousand dollars.....I sold some kiln dried recently and got 1600 for the 1 com and 2500 for the select and better per thousand board feet....and there is cost involved in sawing drying and processing.....wish some-one would pay me 30000 for a thousand ft....year would be done in one transaction or so.....

yeah that article was probably reaching for the "holy crap" reaction and exaggerating things. I get the feeling that the few trees I have (that may or may not even have any bird's eye in them) may still be standing after I'm gone.
