Highland Lakes, New Jersey
Friend if mine less than one mile away had tree work done; gave me a free truckload all bucked and waiting in the driveway. Had it loaded, home and split by noon- I am 65 years slow!!

Congrats!

I just got a free chestnut oak free this week.

Are you sure that's chestnut oak? Looks a lot different than mine:

Good scrounging to both of you! And on the ID, Ive never had chestnut in these years of burning, not sure which one it is

The bark on your oak looks more like a white oak. I've had Chestnut (Rock) oak before and the bark is exactly the same. But..I am no expert. I think someone on here will know better than I, and I'd like to know. Not that it matters - oak is oak!!

EDIT** photo of white oak bark from eco-usa.net

Yeah, that's white oak Bill, one of my favorite woods, I have a cord that's just about ready, I'm going to test it and if it's good to go I'll burn it when the real cold gets here.
I've never seen chestnut oak Mikey, the bark is almost like a black locust, looks like great btu wood.

Exactly what I was thinking. Must not grow around here.

I think Chestnut oak smells like mustard. White oak smells like vanilla.
Mikey is your avatar Jethro Tull? Aqualung?
I keep trying to think where I saw that.

"Sitting on a park bench (da..dada..)
Eying chestnut oak with bad intent (dada..dadada.....dadadum).
Oil's running down the bar..(da..dada)
Greasy fingers smearing chip-filled clothes, hey
Scrounger Bum!!!"

(sorry 'bout that! It's the back of the album cover...remember albums??)

Yes! I had this album on vinyl!!!

Poseidon with a trident?
Riding his chariot of white horses?
I see a great resemblance!!
Great pic
Youre good to go as long as no one mentions Nick Nolte's mug shot. lol.
Vinyl is a far cry from Pandora streaming off the internet thats for sure.

I never forgot record albums. I have more than one copy of Aqualung in my collection.
Did you by chance get to see Ian Anderson doing Thick as a Brick earlier this month at the Beacon?

It took a while for the image to click...but it did despite the wasted brain cells of my youth.
Dont know where the Beacon is. I hope in Massachusetts. Like Mass Mocha.

The Beacon is on Broadway in NYC.
As I've gotten older, I've been more and more reluctant to leave the mountain I live on in NW New Jersey, and haven't been to a show in years (probably the 70's).

I've gotten uglier since that photo..

That is chestnut oak , and yes it is part of the white oak family great stuff !

chestnut oak is my favorite, hands down wood to burn. splits SOOOO much easier than white oak. not nearly as stringy.
