I just wanted to say thanks to all the people that responded to my first thread. The amazing information I received was truly appreciated.

My overburning issue was directly related to my new Rutland thermometer not being calibrated properly. After ordering an IR thermometer I was able to see that at the highest temps the Rutland was over 400 degrees off.

So I was freaking out about overburning and concerned that I wasn't getting enough heat because I wasn't taking the stove up to temp. Now I am cruising at a nice 500 degrees in the stove and 80 degrees in the living room. Also I have a happy wife and mother in law which I think most of you know how important that is.

I also wanted to mention that on the VC Defiant you get about a 20% higher temp if you measure the stove top griddle instead of other parts of the stove top. Hopefully that will be helpful to someone in the future.

Thanks again and I hope everyone has a toasty winter.

Did you have to address those monster windows at all?

Not yet Charles but I am thinking about it. The moulding around the windows is about 6 inches deep. I was thinking about just putting up some plastic sheeting to create a layer of insulated air and stopping the draft.

Just remember... vapor barrier must be the inner-most pane. So, if your plastic is on the inside, make sure it's sealed tight.

Many of the windows in this house would just make most shake their head and walk away... but we're making progress on them.
