I just purchased a home that is hot water baseboard heated that is run by propane. We all know propane costs an arm and a leg. I had an open fireplace in my unfinished basement. I burned it this weekend and it got downstairs to 77degrees but ate a lot of wood. So after convincing my wife that we should get a wood stove I went and bought a vogelzang defender wood stove. I have it on the hearth where it sits and about half in the fireplace. Blower on high it only gets the basement to 70 degrees. Why is that? I'm burning it hot. The stove pipe goes up into fireplace to the damper then stops. Any help would be appreciated. I am a first time wood stove user

Remove the stove pipe & get yourself a Stainless Chimney liner kit & an appliance adapter. Read around in here for info on block-off plates.
Install all of the above & enjoy the heat.

Modern stoves need adequate draft provided by a properly sized flue of at least 15 ft in height. The liner will provide that. The damper sealing, block-off plate will stop the heat from the stove heading right up the chimney to the outdoors.
