So three of us have the same crack? That's a curiosity.

I could maybe try to blame one of my kids for mine if I streatch it - but don't think he had anything to do with yours.

I'm not worried about mine, I just take extra care when loading & keep a layer of ash over it.

On the grate again, I started out with a full fireplace grate that had quite a bit of metal in it - it's burned down to one tiny piece barely big enough to lay across the hole. Pretty hostile in there.

I think its just the nature of the ceramic and the temps involved. Not worried on my end either, and I try not to cram too much in there. Always reach in to set splits down. Might have had one or two impacts to it when I freed up some bridged wood, but thats just wood falling a few inches, doubt that does it. (That said, I was heading through PA this past fall, and I did buy a spare set of ceramics to save on the shipping costs. They will wait in my basement until I need them. Figure Ill put them in the oven before installing to get the moisture out of them)

Good point on the grate. I wonder what the combustion tunnel is made of to handle the direct blast coming out of the nozzle?

its CR something or another stainless made in china. i looked it up when i first got mine and was able to make out the designation and lot number inked on the metal. has great abrasion resistance at high temps. melting point was over 3000*f if i remember correctly.

I just want to add that I TOO love my Varm. I cannot complain about the natural draft either. Its all good! So far no cracks that I know of yet.

The difference between my not so old Irleh and the new Varm is night and day. I feel good about having this boiler and the wife has no problem operating it.
