Leaks when it rains?

Is it normal or not normal for a flex SS liner to leak when it rains? Heavy rain and wind cause a leak. I can't see the water dripping but it forms a rust ring around the inside stove pipe. I can't tale a picture right now but wanted to know if this is a problem and if so, what do I do? Here's an outside picture of my chimney:

Who installed THAT? There's no way that's to code & I'm surprised it's still standing. You need an adapter plate, attached to both your liner & the top of the chimney, with a section of Class A chimney on top of the plate & a cap on top of the Class A. You have a section of connector pipe outside your house. I don't care if it's stainless steel or not, it doesn't go on the outside. It is meant to be installed INSIDE...
 
Hard to see, but don't see a storm collar up there. Prolly the cause of your leak.
 
It was a licensed chimney sweep who did the install, I asked if I needed a double wall instead of that single wall section and he didn't think there was a problem so I believed him. I won't be able to go take a picture of the top for a while now, it's supposed to rain most of this week.

Daksy, what part exactly do you think is out of code? The town inspector didn't see anything wrong with it after the install.

Thanks for the respone I guess? None of this has really answered my question about the leak. Basically you are telling me the installer did a poor job of things and the town inspector doesn't care or doesn't know any better. I'm not worried about it falling over, it's stood up to some very high winds but I will go up and look things over when I have a chance.
As far as buying replacement parts, I know ideally I should buy matching parts but does the adapter plate and class A absolutely need to match the flex liner?

Any 6" flex to Class A adapter plate should work. The Class A will have to be from the same manufacturer as the plate, tho, & you may need a roof brace kit as well if you're in a highwind area......The adapter plate is going to have to be larger than the top area of your chimney in order to be able to bend the ends into returns to keep this watertight. If it isn't available in a size that large, you can always have someone fabricate an aluminum chase top for you.

The angle of the photo is too low for us to see what is happening up top of the chimney. Is there a storm collar on the pipe right above the top cap flashing? Can you post a picture of the top of the chimney?
 
Not sure why you & Hogwildz are caught up on the storm collar, BG.
That looks to be single wall SS connector pipe, not Class A. That is NOT a code compliant install.
With a properly installed adapter plate & possibly a small chase top, a storm collar would not be needed.
 
Just trying to puzzle out why rain is getting down past two 90 deg turns in the flue. If the storm collar is missing that would explain the issue and point out that the "pro" installer was pretty forgetful.

His questions was about a leak, that is why it was addressed as such.
By the photos alone, not sure what he has up there. Guess your eagle eyes are better than ours and can tell him exactly what he has and what he needs.

What is the exact code that states a liner cannot protrude out the top of an existing chimney?
My double wall does exactly that , with a top plate, clamp set and a storm collar that came from Duravent for that exact purpose.
 
& good morning to you, too, HW. The OP asks about a flex liner. My eyes ARE good enough to tell me that what he has sticking out of his chimney is stainless steel connector, (maybe rigid liner) probably single wall. I don't know what your experience with installation is, so I can't fault anything you say. I've paid my dues out in the field & that's NOT how it's done. I cited the correct method above...Then again, maybe the company I worked for needs to send some folks your way so that they can learn the best ways to stop leaks on bad installs...
PS it's 0539 hrs & I AM a bit cranky. Back bad & a new mattress purchased by the GF without my consult...

Not sure what it is, something with "Memory Foam" or something like that,
but it cost more than my winter beater Sebring & I can't stand it.

I will first chance I have. I can definitely tell you all it is single wall, the day they installed it I asked if it needed to be double wall and they told me no, it's fine and will work well. I did put a single wall insulated wrap around it so it doesn't cool the flue gasses as much as it would otherwise.
