Installing Harman pc 45 today have pellet question

Hi,

I been doing some reading it I understand I can burn straight pellets with the corn burn pot with large holes. My question is do I leave that agitator on and how about the end cap and top cap? I see one at the local bar running with no agitator and no top or end cap but he has the pellet pot. Also what about the exhaust fan plate that is mentioned in other threads, is it necessary to burn straight pellets or is the pellet pot kit and exhaust fan plate only necessary to bump the BTU from 45k to 50k? I just want to make sure I can burn pellets with large holed corn pot that came with it without any mods. I think the kit is just to get 5k more btu if I am reading other threads right.

Yes you can burn pellets but it will not be as efficient with the corn pot. Save the stir and the top cap if burning just pellets. The only way you will get 50,000 btu is to burn over six pounds of pellets per HOUR.

Thanks Eric,

So I can run it with the large corn put and do not use the top cap and stir rod correct? But to get 50,000 BTU I need the kit which is a new pot and a different exhaust fan cover correct? I will go get the pellet kit and do it right just wondering if I can fire it up in the meantime until I get it without hurting anything.
 
I should ask one more question about the venting too. The guy I bought it from had it setup like this. clean out T coming off stove, running vertical 3' then an elbow through the wall with a 3' horizontal pipe and another elbow turning up outside for another vertical 3' run. I read you should not have more then 2 90's and if you do then to use 4" pipe. This is 4" pipe with the air return in it, corn pipe I believe as he burned a mix of pellets and corn. am I ok to install this or is a huge no no to have some vertical pipe in the house and another vertical run outside as well? All installation instructions I have read either show it going straight out the wall and up or up inside then straight out.

Wow what was the stove in the middle of his basement? Read the manual and either use a straight horizontal or a 3' vertical rise. Do not get carried away with elbows your EVL should be less than 15 with 3" and 30 with 4".

Unless you are a farmer stick with pellets. Corn has to many issues compared to pellets.

Use the large holed tray-pot and the large hole exhaust fan cover plate and you can mix a lot of corn if you want. I am currently using about 25% corn for the last 2 days and its burning great. I am experimenting to see how high of blend I can get without problems. No stirrer or reflector needed with higher pellet blend. Remember that corn has a high acid burn and needs to have a multifuel venting for safe continued use.
 
Can I ask one last question? If I am using the corn pot and I removed the stir thing and top reflector, do I also remove tthe front reflector? I am getting the pellet kit tomorrow from local dealer and right now I have stir thing and top reflector off but front one on. Pot is filling fast with ash. Should I remove front plate?
 
You will need the plate that still covers the lower part of the tray to keep air going up thru. Picture will help.

Gosh I feel guilty asking another question everyone has been so helpful I can't say thank you enough. B!!!ut I do have on more, should I take fresh air from outside or is insde OK? House was built in the 70's and I do have i buttoned up pretty good..
 
I would OAK. Can be done for pretty cheap. Better get things buttoned up as there is some cold ugly weather coming. Got over 4 inches of snow today and they say we may get 6 to 10 more and falling temps and to stay for a long time. Got the garage clean enough to store the car and stove filled to keep it from freezing.

I was thinking i pobably better as well. U are right we got some cold weather coming just as well do it right and be done with it! Thanks and stay warm up there!!
 
The one listed with the venting on CL?
 
There was a couple of them listed on Minneapolis craigslist both I think had venting. One used 7 years for $1800 and one for $1250 used one season. I went for the one for $1250 and yes it had all the venting too. Was what he said it was, clean nice shape almost like new. Sat in his living room past 4-5 years unused so I went bought it and she's working great.
 
With that payout you should have the investment paid back with savings over oil or propain this season. I am burning the pellets from Fleet Farm, Superior- Marth and pretty happy. Better than the Indeck from Menards. You will have a lot of support of that stove here on this site.
 
I have electric baseboard heat and last year had a couple electric bills of upwards of $500 a month so I think she will pay for itself in about one season. But I also had an electric 220 heater in my garage (mancave) so that ran it up probably $100-$150 over just the house. The garage also has a pellet stove now, just a used pelpro glowboy but works good for out there. I am diggin the pellet stoves so far! I got burnt on a piece of junk Golden Eagle Talon I bought at Farm Fleet brand new, $999 on sale used it two weeks and it is sitting in my basement unhooked wondering what I am going to do with it. It's a Breckwell Big E knock off and it was a big piece of crap. Had nothing but trouble with it so that is why I just went after that Harmon and replaced it with that.

For pellets I am burning Menards Indek right now I see they are really ashy so will try something different for the next pallet.
 
I made mention of the pellets as FF has them on sale for 205/Ton Maybe your lucky and have a better selection of pellets.
 
The local dealer for Harmon stoves I got the kit at today has a wide selection. He has white lighting for like 205 /ton but he had a bunch of other brands too. I forget the brand he recommended but it was $269 a pallet but a pallet had 10 more bags 60 instead of 50. I think it was called heartland or something like that might try those, $269 is high but since it's 10 more bags then that brings it down a bit.
 
Your gonna' like your 45. Dependable and will burn any pellet with no complaints. Get a good surge protector for it, it'll save you some money someday.

And its easier to clean than the rest of the p series with the toolless burn tray.
