Yes and yes . . . one of the reasons that it and its more famous ilk, The Magic Heat, are not seen too often here . . . or at least installed on today's EPA stoves . . . which heat the home by heating up the stove vs. heating up the flue.

That might be a decent bandaid for an inefficient old stove like one with no baffling, but it is not appropriate for an EPA stove.

We used to have a regular poster on the forum who liked the Magic Heat but he also took a lot of heat from the members who knew better than to use those things.

As for the older stoves, I remember well back in the 70's when wood stoves were rolled out like hotcakes. I knew a few folks who put them in and absolutely loved them.....until their chimneys plugged. Every one we knew had that problem. Some learned and removed them while others simply carried on as usual. They did admit it was a real job cleaning those things too.
 
John Gulland says because of the problems with them that they have been banned in Canada for years.
 
What ever happened to Pook? This was his favorite subject. Lol
