Hi all,

I have an Englander stove, model 55-TRPAH. It's a little more than a year old and the igniter has burned out.

I see that Englander sells a replacement igniter, for about $75 with shipping. By all appearances, it's just a standard-issue stainless cartridge heater, which raises the question - would it be a terrible idea to replace it with a generic unit?

I am asking because I can run down to the local industrial supply and pick up a quality name-brand cartridge heater for about half the price, and have it tomorrow, vs paying more and waiting for shipping from Englander. Something like this:

http://www.grainger.com/product/TEMPCO-Swaged-Cartridge-Heater-4NJG4?s_pp=false

It's the same specs as far as I can tell - 120v, 300w, 5" long, 3/8" diameter. Rated to 1400 degrees max temp so it should be happy in a pellet stove.

Anyone see an issue with this approach?

I think I may have answered my own question. Here's a link from a pellet stove supply place selling a "generic" replacement for the Englander igniter:

http://www.eastcoasthearth.com/products/englander-25-pdvc-ignitor

By all appearances it's the same part as the one I linked above, the product image is even the same!

I would still love to get feedback before I proceed, if anyone has thoughts. That heater is available on eBay for around $25 shipped, or grainger for $27 picked up. Big savings and faster compared to the official part.

Thanks for the confirmation. Part ordered.

Now I'm browsing Grainger's catalog trying to figure out replacements for everything else on the stove...

Hey, glad to hear it Mike. The way I see it, I was able to support each company in a way that matches what they're specialized for and best at. Grainger got to sell me a generic industrial part, and Englander got to sell me a wonderful pellet stove.

The frustrating thing is how short-lived the igniter was. But, that's arguably my fault for running it on a thermostat that seemed to cycle it on and off many times a day unless it was very cold, even when the stove was set to the lowest heat setting. Guess a better thermostat will be next on the project list.

Some suggestions:
If you set the stove for a lower burn rate it won't cycle as often because it will take longer to reach the set point. To average out to the same temperature you may want to set the thermostat a bit higher.
Also if your thermostat has a dead-band control increase the dead-band.To average out to the same temperature you may want to set the thermostat a bit higher.
Last, a lot of cycles is an indication of excessive heat loss from the house.

That last is 100% dead on, pay attention to what the stove is telling you dwizum.

Hi dwizum

How do you like the 55-TRPAH so far I'm thinking about getting one have a England 25DVC55-SHP10 now and looking to upgrade to a bigger stove any input and info would be great

The grainger igniter does not come with the collar to hold the igniter in place. It does not come with connectors to clip into the control panel and the wires are too short! Our "Generic" aftermarket one does and so does the OEM igniter.
