It is crazy to let the stove go out in December

As many of you have found, this latest warm spell was a surprise. We let the stove go out too.

Last night I was trying to decide if I should put a couple splits in the stove or not but then made one last check on the weather. After all, the temperature in here was over 80; I think it was around 86. What a surprise when I found our temperature was still rising after dark. It had risen 5 degrees in the last couple hours.

So, no wood went into the stove last night. When we got up this morning we expected the house to be a bit cool because of the coming cold front. Wrong! The temperature was still 45 degrees! But, we did have a fire going by noon and the temperature is still dropping. May have to bring more wood to the porch yet this week.

So, anyone else letting their stoves go out?

I let mine go out. I should go down and give it a good cleaning. I'm home tomorrow so I'll put it on the list...

It is such a PITA this time of year when we are still having shoulder season. Tomorrow they are saying we'll be in the 50s but then getting colder. I think for me that will translate to low 40s and getting colder.

I did let the Fireview in the main living area go out, but I lit off the VC Resolute in the family room downstairs just to get some indirect heat up into the house without hearing that nasty oil furnace kick on. ...hate that thing.

The last week I have only been burning at night. Starting Saturday winter appears to be kicking in.
 
I loaded the stove last night before bed and let it go this morning. There's still a few coals in there now. Haven't decided if I going to relight it tonight.
 
Yes it's been warm here too! Right now it's 51 degrees and muggy.. Crazy weather so far here!
 
We haven't had our Cape Cod going 24/7 yet. It puts out so much heat, that we just make small hot fires and let them go out. Maybe our house is well insulated. (2000sft with 2000 sft walk-out ground level, 2x6 walls)

Hit 50 yesterday and Today, only burned an afternoon fire and a small load overnight, house was over 62 both this and last morning, No reason to fire the stove with the sun out the house will stay above 60 all day. Tonight supposed to be 28. Have fire lit will stoke at 11pm for overnight.
 
Not crazy at all. No since in wasting wood if you don't really need the heat. I've been only burning at night since thanksgiving but that all about to change==c

My stove has been out for three days because of two factors, 1. the warm spell, 2. Im working second shift so Im all out of whack. Im going to fire it up when i get home tonight because the warms spell is OVER, gonna get cold through out the weekend.

MIne has been down for two days due to it being in the fifties and sixties. I split wood in a tee shirt this afternoon.

All over tomorrow after noon when the temps will head south with rain and then for sure with sleet and freezing rain for the weekend.
 
We put in a small load last night, just a few small splits. The stove was cold by morning. DH let it go out during the day today too and we're just running a small fire now too.
 
It is hovering around 45* here. I don't let it go out completely. I do wait until there are only a handful of coals left before a place a few small splits in.

Hello, neighbor. Where did you get your Cod? We're pretty poor around here when it comes to stove shops.

It was 60 when I got up today. You must've slept in, Dennis.

Well, hold on to your hats, supposed to be -11 tonight in MN and sub zero for the foreseeable future. I am sure that cold front will make its way East.

Hauled in a load of Red Elm and Oak to the porch.

I think I found your guys weather out here, you can have it back! Highs below freezing and a wind chill tonight down to -20c (-4f) tonight. Very unusual for the west coast. Burning more than I thought possible :)

Out west is getting hit with brutal cold and it is coming this way.. but the weekend we'll start feeling it. For me it will be a 2 stove week-end for sure.
 
Sister sent a note from North Texas. Sleet started covering the roads at two this afternoon and is supposed to keep it up for 12 to 14 hours. At least a half inch of ice expected. Nine degrees tomorrow night and not forecast to get above freezing for a week.

ETA: Just checked their conditions. Now expected to be five to six inches of ice and snow.

Brother Bart, that sounds familiar. We are in middle Tennessee and we started at 70 this morning but the front went thru and now is a steady rain with 38 degrees and still falling!

Yep, right there with you. Sub zero tonight. A good test on our new system. So far we are managing.
 
Crazy weather across the board. Red alert here, have the pellet stove and the fireview cranked up. Cannot let the propane enemy win! -20 to -30 windchills will test things.

Nothing exciting, we have a propane boiler and had that as our primary heat for years. This year we bought a box stove for the basement and are heating with wood primarily. It started out as a cost savings venture, but it has progressed into an obsession. I'm a hobby woodcarver, so I was wood obsessed before now, but now its in overdrive. So far, the boiler hasn’t even been turned on yet. Don't even want to think of buying propane if I can help it.
 
Very cool, now you have a use for the wood scraps that don't make the cut?
 
Small fire this evening, more for dampness (probably about 40 -45F here in Icey Hollow tonight) in both stoves. No fires at all during the day, not even a morning reload. Had to use the Super Cedars to light off, not enough coals to get it going.

It's going to drop big time by Saturday. I've been working on stocking up the firewood in the house every time Murph & I go out on patrol.

Working all weekend, again, so I want to be ready.
