Sorry for the crappy pic. I will get a better one, for a tree id. I was just out planning my future scrounge. Thanks.

Based on the walnuts under the snow near the base of the tree, I am able to identify it as walnut.

Future firewood.

Agree, you can easily see the walnuts under the snow! :) It should burn well!

With the lack of undergrowth, bark type, growth habit, and presence of walnuts I would say this is a walnut tree. I cut and burn a lot of walnut. I throw a lot of logs in the fire that look like a nice gun stock or table leg but the stuff I cut isn't good for anything but firewood.

I have to say walnut also. The branch tips don't look as much like it - maybe the angle. The trunk and large branching look spot on. Only other tree I can think of would be butternut.

Looks like opposite branching to me; most likely maple of some sort. Although a couple of years ago I posted a pic a lot like yours and almost started a war, Maple lovers against everyone else. The tree turned out to be Blue Ash! Blue Ash has scaly or flakey bark and looks nothing like White Ash bark. I don't know for sure if Blue Ash grows up your way and the picture ain't that great or I'd say maybe Blue Ash. Remember the acronym for the only trees with opposite branching: mad Horse That is; Maple, Ash, Dogwood, Horse chestnut. Maple includes all maples such as box elder.
