Hey guys.. Just scored some free stuff from craigslist.. Guy said it was maple that had been down for a year.. Just started to split it.. very gnarly and tough to split so don't think it's a soft maple? Any ideas? Thanks

You have identified it correctly.

Gnarly Maple LOL. Have you hot any super gnarly sections with the real tight curls yet? The are fun to try and split.

Tons so far.. Let's just say it's been an adventure.. Apparently I've only split nice soft maple before...

Sugar?

Soft Maple, for sure

I had to use hydraulics on the maple I scored. Everything I swung at it bounced. It was good solid wood. Nothing soft about it.
Good score.
