Can someone please tell me what this pipe is for? I am adding an inline damper to this stove, and when I took the stove pipe apart I found this threaded, galvanized pipe. Is it needed, or can I remove it and add my damper? Thanks.

I'd say get it out of there. It was probably part of what ever was used to clean the pipe & chimney at some time in the past. Probably came apart during a sweep...

It's actually attached to the stove itself. It has a 90 degree elbow on it that goes out of the back of the stove.

Okay. Never mind the cleaning statement. It must've been some sort of a home-brewed DHW system...Can you remove it & plug or cap the pipe where it exits the back?

DHW?

That is odd, I wonder if it was a conduit for a control wire for a flue damper?

Is your stove a Earth Stove? If so I believe it was an early attempt at secondary air. My old earth stove had everything you discribe except the vertical pipe. Are you sure it's galvanized?

It is actually an Earth stove. So, I think I will just remove it and cap it in the back.
