Stove mode/room mode question for Harman

well, overnite got down to zero here in Eastern Pa So i got to see how my Harman P61A handled it.
Piece a cake for this beast... anyways,
my question arises since I did a bit of expirimenting last nite when we were at 10 degrees.
on feed rate 3, Room temp - 70 degrees, My flames we're up to the heat exchanger quite a bit of time before ramping down for a while..this would go on all evening. Fine.. when it ramped down after being satisfied via the Temp probe,
I put it on Stove temp -4 which is exact line of room temp 70 mark..
The flames we;re only about half way as high as they we're in room temp and never actually got as high. Temp actually dropped a degree or 2...
didn't change anything else..
I always assumed that ST -4 and RT -70 degrees we're the same heat output even though they are used in 2 different ways...meaning the temp of your space would still end up around 70 or so...someone clue me in on this..

Not exactly.......In RT...the stove is maintaining temp to keep the ESP satisfied....regardless of room temp. In RT mode, the temp probe controls heat output. There's no real link between ST# and room temp.

ok... so satisfying the ESP in ST has to equate to a room temp eventually? 65/70/75 degrees? Guess I was try to find out which would use less pellets and keep us around 70 degrees.

ST is the stove trying to maintain a certain exhaust temp, regardless of the inside temp or even what (crappy or great) pellets you are burning. It will just burn more to get the temp up if it's a cooler pellet. RT is like a wall thermostat, once satisfied by a certain temp the stove will throttle down or even turn off (if in auto).

Read the sticky at the top of this forums page, How your Harman works and what your manual doesn't tell you. It will clear things up for you.

Two different things.
Think of it as 2 electric space heaters. On has a thermostat.......one has a "low" and "high." Low might keep your room at 72 degrees........or not.....its a fixed temperature for the heater and is independent of the room temperature.

I don't think one has an advantage over the other as far as pellet useage is concerned. Personally I use RT in manual 95% of the time. If you use RT and its 40deg.outside, it might keep you comfortable on #2. If its -10 deg....you might need 6 or 7. Why bother when the RT setting will do it for you?
