-34 celcius with the wind chill dipping below -50, i finally broke down and threw some oak on the fire.....was hoping to go the entire winter without reaching into the oak stash, its dry, just wanted to save it for next year once the wife is off mat leave and we can make better use of longer burning hard woods, but ill tell you what....it was worth it.....threw it in and five minutes later the damper on the shove was shut down another 50% from where i usually run it, the blower fan on the back to englander was turned to high, the stove temp was rising and the house shot up 6 degree's in about 20 minutes......I LOVE DRY OAK

I thought you were going to say you broke down and had to use gas or oil. Glad to hear it's not quite THAT bad for you.

electric has been supplementing ....but it always does on the really cold days.....try to keep the house warm enough on most days so the furnace doesn't have to run...but some days its just unavoidable

tonight is going to be a test for a lot of stoves. gonna be down right cold by morning here in the mid atlantic.

Predicted wind chills are -30 here tonight plus lots of fresh snow to blow around. Snowed in feels so nice next to the stove. Got the Nat Gas furnace set at 65 just in case but the stove's doing just fine so far.

Same here. I was burning ash and switched to oak when it got real cold. I was standing upstairs and heard the stove clinking from the heat change after about 5 mins. Damper is damn near closed and still runs at 500+...nothing better.....

Hey Osage if we had temps like the OP I think the world would stop! And I was able to hold off burning my oak until about the first of October! Pretty hard when it's 90% of your stacks!

Yep - went for a walk with the boys today and got a "Horrible dad" look from a neighbor. :) Oak is definitely on the menu as my locust is gettin' low.

I have five cords of oak that isn't quite ready, so I am holding off on it until next year. In the mean time I have three cords of mixed hardwood that is ready to burn. About half of the mixed wood is oak, so I can't complain. If anything I am worried about having nothing but oak next year. I like to mix in some lighter woods for quicker heat.
