Good info all thanks. The cat engagement times are similar to how long it takes to get secondary burn going in the T6. But the extra long burn times are not.

They have the Ashford now, I think I remember you saying the door was plain, I'm sure a local metal worker could "class" it up for you. Probably 24hr burns in your typical climate. :)

Yes, I like our T6 door much better than the new model's. The Jotul F45/50/55 also look plain jane to me. I'm not sure I would add non-cast grillework to a cast iron stove. I don't like that look either. Twud be nice if their was an option for factory cast grilles.

I asked him about running the stove too hot and having the innerds glow (around the cat and air inlet lip) and he said they run their stove full throttle to where the whole inside glows. Obviously that might be excessive but it made me realize that this is a steel box made to work. If I end up abusing a cat and replacing it every few years instead of every 10 so be it if it means getting the heat output I want and ease of use.
I too have never sweated running the thing too hard. Can't say I've had the "innerds glow" - unless you mean the cat itself. But it's not all that uncommon for my cat thermometer (I replaced the dumbed-down kind with the one with a scale) to read 2000 degrees or occasionally past the end of the scale. This is my 5th winter with my BK Princess, and the cat still seems fine.

When running the princess, I had the cat, cat housing and air intake lip area glowing a few times. Good to hear that your cat has put up with those abusive temps ;)

My 2009 Princes Insert has been running strong in the -24 degrees temps and -50 wind chill we are having in Minneapolis. Works evan better with high BTU woods. Am getting 8 to12 hour burn times to the coal stage with low BTU wood. Am burning a cart of wood each day. The insert is still on original cat but am planning on replacing next fall. the fan motor is running all the time but does require a good cleaning with compressed air to remove the dust or it rattles. In these exteme cold temps I have had to turn up the temp closer to medium.

The house 1,500 (square feet) is always in the the 70's in the living room, and cooler in the bed rooms.

Cleaning the 6 inch SS brings about a half a coffee can after buring all winter. Its burning clean with covered dry wood. have a loveless ash vac and can clean around the by-pass shelf where the stuff falls.

I really do not have any reason to be on the site as much as I use to because it works so good.

Take care, Jim

Good to hear from you Lanning, I was wondering what happened to you, I remember we got out stoves at the same time.

I've been running both of my stoves during the cold snap and it has been working out well. My stupid leaky house still stays above 70 even during these week's -50 wind chills.

Unfortunately I guess I still need to run my furnace during the super cold snaps. Why? My second floor shower wouldn't run this morning. I ended up taking off all the insulation in the attic above the garage to solve this puzzle. Turns out I have a furnace pipe going to the bottom of this shower to keep the pipes warm. I buttoned up the insulation (adding a little extra while I was in there) and turned on the furnace. 15 minutes later my shower came on!

I guess I'll need to add a little furnace heat now and then to keep the pipes up to temp.

That seems like it's pushing it a bit. The metal innards can bend or crack when they get that hot - it happened on my old Dutchwest, and though BK is better of course, "you cannah violate the laws of physics". I actually think mine has developed a slightly bent piece kinda behind the cat, between it and the bypass opening.

That"s why I backed off. The general consus here was that it was too hot. The gentleman at BK said thats how they burn theirs and that it's ok. Who knows.... I haven't needed to run the King that hot.

That piece was bent on my princess as well. Not sure sure if it was that way new or not. BKVP said some are that way installed. https://www.hearth.com/talk/threads/blaze-king-ultra-bypass-gasket-frame.112496/#post-1502136 "
The other part, the bar stock that runs east to west is called (I can't tell you what we call it) but its role is to keep someone from shoving a piece of wood into the stove and preventing the bypass from closing. It is often slightly twisted when installed and is also replaceable....however doing so is cosmetic."

Got back into town the other night at midnight from working up on the slope and came home to a packed and cruising stove. I love it, my wife is fully on board and has no problem keeping this stove going while I'm away.

Last January we paid $250 for gas, our first full month in this house, this december our bill was $104. We didn't burn completely 24/7 I'm guessing we burned 70%. I got a gas modine heating a 36'x24' garage, we have gas oven, water heater, and dryer. I'm happy with the savings and the potential for greater savings.

After paying a little more attention to stove top temps, I believe I don't really get above 550 with gauge centered up on stove. I keep my blowers on constantly and I'm guessing this might keep my temps lower than what some of you are seeing.

I'm noticing a pattern with my glass, it gets dark with low burns, it seems to build up and get thicker, once it gets so thick it seems to flake and burn off easier, then process repeats.

whats your average temp of the house?

My new stove top gauge reads about 550 on low burn with a cat temp near the top and no fans. The rest of the stove top is likely quite cooler, not sure how valuable a stove top meter is on these stoves and the fans certainly lower the reading.

After I clean my glass I get the similar stages of haze, then film, then shiny layer, then crinkle, then peel. I can rub the worst of it off of the lower corners with my finger which generates a good set of dragon eyes but the rest of the darkened areas stay darkened.

whats your average temp of the house?
Stove room temp is pretty consistent 80-84, upstairs is fairly large so the middle areas atop the stairs are 72-76, the far ends of the upstairs are a large bonus room above the garage and master bedroom these rooms are 68-72. If I'm not burning we keep the house stat at 72.

I haven't cleaned my glass all year on my Blaze king. After all of the reports of dirty glass, I've been pleasantly surprised with my reality: about 1/2 the glass stays perfectly clear, no fly ash or haze. The other half is brown but not thick. I basically get a goblet shaped section of clear glass.

My zc fireplace gets its glass cleaned at least once every two weeks.

A couple questions about the BK. I have a princess, and ordered a new door gasket and door latch. The latch that came is different. I noticed when I picked my stuff up thd new stoves have this new style latch. Just wondering if it will work with my door? I have the round metal style as the new one is flat.

Also has anyone tried adjusting their bypass latch? Mine seems very easy to lock. I tried adjusting the nut but it broke very easy. Must of had some warmth still in it.

Mine heats my home great, 1000 square ft main level. And 800 sq ft basement. I live in the bc interior. I think with that sq footage I would up it to the king.

How does the Princess heat 2400 square-foot house in Minnesota. does anyone have one in Minnesota?

2400 sq' in a cold climate is King territory.

Ack! you broke the bypass? Are you able to run the stove?
