Warm up "pop" from Osburn 2400

I've been burning in the Osburn 2400 insert for about 3 weeks... Love it!! However I've noticed 3 or 4 times now in the last week than as it's warming up after starting a new fire that in the 300-400F stove temp range there's a "pop". First time I thought it was just a piece of wood falling down against the door/glass, but its done it now with just a couple pieces that couldnt fall anywhere.
The best way to describe it is I have a flat square cookie sheet that whenever I use it in the oven after a few mintues it "pops" then it's no longer flat. It's kinda warped with 2 opposite corners tipped up and the other 2 lay flat. Make sense?
Given how the sounds are near identical I'm leaning towards something within the stove is warped. I've got 2 stove temp thermometers and a IR gun and I've not seen anything that would suggest it's gotten to hot somewhere... I've only seen upper 700's
Secondly I dont know where to look. I mean what has the chance to get hot enough but is thin enough to be able to warp at these lower temps?
I've noticed it seems to happen if it warms up faster than average, like I put a bunch of wood scraps or whatever on to burn down coals or something..However I've not heard a reverse "pop" when it cools. I've also not noticed any difference in burning...
Thoughts?
 
Being an insert its surrounded with an outside layer of metal that could possibly expand and contract with the heating up process. Sometimes I get the same thing with the back heat shield on my stove
 
My stove is 4 years old and I still hear pops, pings and everything else. You're heating steel/metal to 700+ F. I think it is a normal process.... When cooling the metal cools down much faster than when heating. For example, I have cookie sheets that POP and actually twist a bit in the over when baking. When when cooling down they don't make that sound and I suddenly find them back in their proper shape...

Don't sweat it..keep heating :)

I have the exact same issue with my stove. Although I do notice it more with cooling than heating up
 
My Alderlea t5 is always creaking on warm up and cool down. I've come to know when it's time to reload and do dampering by the sounds!

Hmmm, I never heardthis on the Jotul and this is separate from the normal heat expansion pings. I guess what intrigued me is that its only one distinct pop and thats it. Also as i mentioned in my original post the sound is nearly dead on for a oven pan warping as it warms up which concerned me that it was happening to the box somewhere... Also Im surprised it didnt do this right from the start, not 3 weeks in... Guess I'll carry on for now and see what happnes... Thanks!
 
Im on my second Osburn 2000 and this one tings and pops more than the first one, sounds normal to me.
 
It's just your stove talking to you- letting you know how happy she is to be alive. My recommendation, talk back to her.

I would not be happy or content hearing that cookies sheet pop either. My stove ticks, and pings on warm up/ cool down.
Not all cracks/crystallization are visible in metals until they fail. Can you record sound/ video and post?
 
My 30 ticks and pings for over an hour as it heats up.... always reminded me of Steven King's description of Christine's engine.

I have the same unit. I get pings and clicks regularly. As others have stated, I can tell what the stove is doing based on the rhythm. That being said, I don't think I've ever heard the single pop as you are describing. The block off plate may be the culprit as boiler74 mentioned.

Outside of the strange sounds how is the 2400 working out for you?

I can try but it seems to do it rather unconsistently. I've only heard it once since I posted it... i sat in front of it friday evening for about an hr waiting to hear it but nothing...

No i dont. I wanted to when I switched them but was waiting on some free Kaowool so I'll be doing that this summer.

Yea, i get the normal pings and that to but this is distinctly different. I just dont know what within the stove could be thin enough to produce the sound but have no effect on the stove..
Outside this sound and the placement of the heat sensor for the blower i freakin love this thing... My house is 1950sqft built in the late 70's and pretty well insulated(energy audit done in 09 about a yr beforei bought it ) and has a decent floorplan. While I realize they differ signifcantly, with the Jotul I kept arooms i didnt use closed off or doors just slightly ajar to keep the others rooms 63-66ish typically. Tolerable but I had to keep the 450 fed or the heat fell off quickly esp. under 20f or windy. Being gone 10-12hrs a day I always came home to upper 50s and would take all evening to get back up there
Now the house rarely gets below 64-65 and it takes very little time or effort before the house is back up to 70+... I wish I wouldve bought this the first go around..
Hmmm you know that block off plate idea has me thinking.. I'm rolling with out the surround and that sleeve it connects to(making a custom one)..So as I sit here looking at it, I wonder if the thin jacket around the box that the liner brackets screw into could be the culprit ?

I was wondering the same thing about the air jacket on the outside of the stove, theres really nothing else that it could be everything else is plate steel.
 
Hi Sled- Prob a very normal sound of a steel stove (that you have) part that is expanding and pops, steel stoves do that a lot- sometimes loud pops are liners too, adjusting themselves in the chimney liner, most of the time the first few fires they get adjusted and stop, but the stoves continue to do so. My first stove was a Quad 3100 that kaplinked all the time, it got more loud as the stove aged, then moved to a Jotul Oslo for 8 seasons, those kaplinks went away. I then changed to my present Kodiak 1700 from Enviro, the pops and kaplinks are back. I don't mind, it does remind you all is progressing in the upswing of temp. Enjoy that heat beast, I would think the Osburn would definitely outheat the Kennebec seeing as the firebox is much larger. The Kennebec is about a 1500 sqft heater. Good luck, keep the wood burning.
