Can't remember what to call it but the pipe that comes out of the top of the stove? Flue? I have a hearthstone heritage with an elbow pipe going into the wall off the top of the stove. Noticed today after not using it for a few days an oily or wet looking spot on the pipe. Any ideas??

Nope and if I did I would not be asking the question. It is a soapstone stove which can't have anything on top of it
Nothing goes on top of the stove except for what is on there now which is the two temp gauges

If I remember correctly that stove has been burning for at least a couple of seasons. It ain't something finally deciding to leech out of the pipe. Somebody in that house got some 'splaining to do. 
I just noticed it tonight and will let the stove cool down tomorrow and try to clean it off. And yes if I cooked on top of the stove especially something like bacon I would know what it is. Lol

Seems like stove paint is fairly pourus and will take up a stain rather easily. Could be someone was dusting and wiped a rag over it or is that where you lay your hand to test flue temps?

My Hearthstone Shelburne, leaked stinky oily black water out of the bottom during the first real firing, was told it's the nature of the beast, may happen every year may not....
Don't think it's related to what you're seeing.
Maybe it'll morph into an image of Jesus or the Virgin Mary? Then u can sell it on eBay for big bucks!

It is cleaning product that one of the kids thought would be a good idea to get a spot off the pipe with when they were dusting. It is an oil based product.

BTW.. you can put "stuff" on top the stove. we have a steamer on there full time, and cook a lot of soups, stews and roasts and stuff on ours, not a problem yet. Now.. bacon.. I don't know. If that got in the stone, I guess it would smell like breakfast anytime the stove was hot.. wait.. what's the downside again?.
LOL.
We are carefull about not sliding a pot or pan or the steamer around on the top of the stove, though I do know that scratches can be sanded out pretty easy. We fill the steamer where it sits rather than taking it to the sink etc.
