Thanks, we're about to refinish our floors and having a difficult time deciding which stain to use. Wife likes the provincial and I like the nutmeg, not sure there's much difference. Definitely want to get away from the old amber color.

Looks intentional, I doubt anyone would notice.
The vertical columns are wood right? The clearance I figure is from the poplar column to the side of the firebox, is that right ? (rather than just the 4 inches of quartzite between the Clydesdale ornamental black metal surround plates and the poplar column?)
OldLumberKid - yes originally the stone was 12 inches all around from the ends of the firebox. In our area, code is 7 inches on the sides and 11 inches above non combustible material from the edges of the firebox. The mantel covers about an inch and a half on the sides and a half inch on top. The majority of the stone is covered by the Clyde's cast iron surround(bummer that the beauty of the stone is covered but the surround only comes in one size- I as hoping for something smaller.) Everything is within code and manufacturers guidelines on this setup. Everything looks symmetrical so we are good with it.
