I read somewhere here within the last few weeks about chains from somewhere online and I think I remember seeing around $8 per chain. I was thinking of picking up a few more for my Stihl 170 since I use that the most and one of the chains is close to the end of use. Any recommendations are appreciated. My saw shop sells them buy 2 get 1 free and IIRC I paid somewhere around $50 for 3. Can they be bought cheaper online? Thanks in advance- Tim

I don't know, but I would check out ebay. If you don't buy off ebay, then look at ebay and see if the seller has a website aside from ebay. That is how I found my chainsaw for a deal. Good Luck.

Last time I was on Bailey's website they were running a special but that was late fall. I had planned on getting Woodland Pro, but Oregon was almost half the price at the time (or vice versa, can't remember which was the deal). I don't know about finding loops for $8 though. I was looking for a 18" bar too, so that'd be a little more than whatever you have on a 170.

Maybe I was dreaming haha! I checked eBay and there is a 5 pack with free shipping, Stihl 61 PMM3 50 chains for $72. That is 14.40/chain. Baileys has Woodland Pro chains for 12.99ea and to get 3 with $9.95 shipping is 16+ per chain. I haven't used anything but the Stihl chains and they work good as far as I can tell. Is the Woodland worth the extra $2 per loop? Should I wait until they have a special like you said? I'm not in a super hurry here, just looking ahead

I like the woodland pro but find that the Stihl RS is a superior chain in quality. Just my opinion.

Thanks for the reply Jags. I'll probably just stick with the Stihl RS then

It's hard to beat Stihl chain. The yellow link is the "good" one, the green link is anti-kickback and will cut a little slower. The green chain will be great if you are new to saws, not so great if you have a lot of wood to cut through in a day and know what you are doing.

If I need to cut a lot of wood I bust out the big boy, the 391. Might not be "big" to some, but its the biggest one I have run besides my buddies 066 w/ 36" bar and that was only for 10 minutes. I think I can safely go "yellow" at this point, I have a few years under my belt but in no way consider myself any kind of expert. Pretty sure all my chains are the green ones right now. I'm going to head to my saw shop early next week, they have buy 2 get 1 free and I can't remember how much that was for the smaller saw. I have the one chain that broke when I hit the nail last year, I'm going to see if its salvageable. Plus I get to look at a bunch of saws while I'm there!

as far as chains go there are Stihl and all others - in that order. This is just my opinion but based on real word experience.

The less aggressive chains can be nice for dirty wood but for clean wood get the yellow - RS I think

Thanks I will have to check them out

If you use any barsr 24" or over, try the skip chain. Half the cutters to sharpen and the chips clear better.

I only have a 20" on my 391 but if I step up to the 25" I will definitely keep that in mind, thank you! The other saw is just a lil 170 w/14" bar

I run a Oregon 28" bar on My 390XP with a non skip chain. Would a skip chain be noticeably slower cutting?

I don't think you will see any difference. All the cutters aren't necessarily pulling a chip as the cutters go through the wood.

That's all I use on the longer bars.Sharpens faster too.
