Since I split all my wood by had it's a tie between sweet gum ,a.k.a. "sweat gum" and sycamore.

I've not turned anything down. Got Russian Olive a couple years ago and gave most away after doing some searching. What I kept seems to burn OK. Easy to take the low quality when it is delivered for free from the wood fairy.

Turn away wood? I can't be the only one who comes across a half rotted punky downed tree and thinks hmmmm I can cut some good heartwood over there, and there....and ends up bringing most all of it home thinking its ok, it'll dry out in the sun! Can't imagine saying no to any load if it was DELIVERED to me, even a load of bucked willow!

I am a wood snob. I don't have the time or space for less than prime wood. I am three years ahead and there is no shortage of good free stuff near me. When scrounging I go for the maximum BTU per man hour. I have walked away from lesser wood more than once and will again.

Everything that gets culled from the open fields and hedgerows gets burned.
I have burned staghorn sumac and privet and morrows honeysuckle.
If it doesnt die back at the end of the growing season, its wood.

If it can fit in the toaster I can cook it.
