Last year and the year before I saw a lot of complaints on the forum regarding the MVAE thermostat going blank.
It happened to mine a few times last year but I didn't consider it much of a problem because it was easy to reset.
This fall I got the wall finished that is the final location for my thermostat and I relocated it there. The new location required more wire than was supplied by Quadrafire so I chose to replace the wire rather than splice it.
We are far enough into the heating season that I expected to see the thermostat go blank, but it hasn't happened. That's when I noticed that nobody else, on the forum, is complaining about it happening to theirs.
So my question; "Is anybody having thermostat problems with their MVAE this year?"
It is possible that the wire was responsible for the thermostat problems I was experiencing. There is a phenomenon called triboelectric effect ( I wouldn't make up a name like that), in which movement of the insulation on the wire generates a static charge. That static charge can interfere with signals on the wire. I am thinking that the change in wire resolved my problem.
At this point I am just curious, It seems that I no longer have a problem to fix.

It has been a while since I have had any issues at all with the thermostat. Each time it was under warranty and if memory serves me right was replaced at least 3 times.

I do believe the last replacement included the dealer replacing the wiring as well so you might be onto something!

good here <knocks on wood>

Mine was installed in Feb of 2012 and I have never seen a blank thermostat. FYI, the wire is chased through the floor and up into an inside wall so it doesn't have any contact with insulation.

doesn't have any contact with insulation.
I should clarify, the insulation I am referring to is the electrical insulation of the wire itself.
I think, perhaps, that the temporary installation with the wire not stapled down exacerbated the problem by allowing the cable to move around.

I've no idea as to whether the wire fixed it for you, Harvey, but mine has also been fine with the same wire as with original install (well, I actually replaced it a few days after the boneheads from my original dealer installed it incorrectly). But I chalked my improved performance up to the fact that it's the 3rd stat in 4 years (but has been going strong for two seasons now). I figured Quadrafire finally just figured out how to make a stat that actually worked!

The AE's thermostat is, however, STILL the weak point of an otherwise great stove. Putting most of the brains in the stat so that one can't possibly use another stat was just ridiculously stupid of Quardrafire. It doesn't make the AE better (logic could just as easily have been on a board in the stove), and can't be very profitable (especially given the warranty claims they had to have had in earlier years). I'm still amazed that they never resolved that in later models so that a regular stat could be used.
