Got the new glass (Oslo) - any tricks/tips?

Hello folks - I am hoping some of you veterans can share some tips or tricks (or traps!) that I would benefit from knowing.

(btw, I haven't yet removed the cracked glass but the gasket is [currently] OK. Can I expect it to remain OK after I remove the cracked glass?)

If any of you have a tip or two that you can share, I would much appreciate it! :)


**paid $175 through Jotul dealer, only took 4 days from order to delivery. I would've liked cheaper but I'm happy with only 4 days and it's Jotul - I hated the idea of just 'hoping' the cheaper local guy would get it right..**
 
Take your time with the removal and installation of the glass - wear gloves - the gasket should be fine. I just snug the glass retaining clips to avoid damaging the new glass. Good luck!! :)
 
Good move getting a Jotul glass. This is not the thing to experiment with. I never heard of one breaking. I never did one, but ask here and the stove store. Anything in the manual? Just looking at it, I would tighten all the clamps down a little at a time. How tight?
 
Not too tight. Just until the gasket starts compressing but before the clamps are putting hard pressure on the glass.
 
it's up & running now. Yep I tightened it a little at a time. I didn't notice at first but the clamps each had a little bit of gasket material too, to prevent them from sitting directly on glass. I was intentionally slow to remove everything an I'm glad - I was able to put that material back in place to protect glass from the clamps - otherwise it wouldn't have been as tight, or rattled etc..

Xman23 - when I opened the door to clean out stove, somehow (and I am still in disbelief) the door came off it's hinges and fell on the hearth. Glass cracked. Pins were still in the door - they never dropped through.. I've tried various things to see if I could duplicate it just so I know - no luck. It will forever be a mystery I guess..

I'm not at the cabin so I can't see the hinges. But If I recall, just lift the door and it comes off the pins. Somehow it must have worked it way up a little at a time or as it is closed the gasket is pushing it up. If you have the enamel finish there is a thin brass washer on one of the pins.
 
wow - that must have been a little shocking to have the door fall off. Not to hijack your post but what is up with the 4 horned critter in your avatar? Interesting??
 
BobUrban - that was one of my rams, I used to raise sheep until about 2 years ago. This breed is called Jacob sheep, they all have between 4 and 6 horns (even the ewes - but they don't get nearly as large as what you see on that ram).
 
Any one know what that padding under the clip is? I have a loose clip that cant get any tighter!
 
I don't know what that material is but I'll bet someone here does.
In a pinch, I would probably slice a little bit of material off some excess rope gasket - it's clearly suited for stove temps. Rattling glass is just waiting to break.. :)
