Story on the News...

I see lots and lots of trees with pretty colored leaves on them right now. About 2-3 weeks early I'd say.

Did anyone see the brief news blurb regarding the Farmer's Almanac? They are predicting a mild Winter for the West and a cold Winter for the East.

I don't recall any mention of Fall or Winter starting early. Perhaps I'll check out a copy if I'm at Home Depot any time soon.

For the most part, our summer here has been cooler than normal. Ive been talking with people around here about winter too, Im betting on a colder one than we've seen in past years.

Damn global warming

The leaves are turning right on schedule in the Adirondacks. Usually the third or fourth week in August.

I think it's going to be a cold winter, but that's probably just wishful thinking.

Well I used to be on a snow plowing website and would see them there too.

How true...

The way it "feels"...I'm betting on colder than normal..but also a lot more snow than usual also. 'Keep them thare plow trucks ready'...

From your mouth to Mother Nature's ear... Snow is pretty spotty in DC, we're due for a few snow days this winter...

Don't worry Don....we'll get ours......Was in Edwardsburg, MI the past few and my sister in law's lawn is all chewed up from the squirrels and chimpmunks hoarding for the winter.....

Tons of acorns dropping at my place, more than usual. That's suppose to mean a cold winter?

I have read that due to the low amount of Arctic polar ice that we are in for a late start to winter again.

Ditto in Edwardsburg......where is a wxman or a lore specialist when ya need one ?..............Don't think that Nat Weather Service hads released an outlook yet, but would put about as much faith in that as the global warming and hurricane predictors

the amount of acorns (mast?) changes year to year and i believe goes in cycles. not sure if when they drop signifies anything related to the winter though. one interesting thing i read a while back though is that a large acorn crop and a mild winter results in increased mice populations which leads to increased tick populations which leads to increased lyme disease cases. sorry, not related to wood burning but i thought pretty interesting.

i've seen some color for about a week. the elms in my back yard are droping leave already and the maples are turning.

We need to tell all the "scientists" that are part of the 5 BILLION DOLLAR a year market for such studies to go measure the ice in January.
Ooooh, there is less ice in Greenland.......... yeah in July. Doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that out, they have seasons too.

I don't know about this topic, but when I asked about the origins of casting it got ash canned.. Colored leaves are hearth related or should this get ash canned? Just trying to make sense out of a double standard around here?

Let me tell you something..The acorns always start dropping in August...The leaves will always start turning in August..IT will be cold in the winter and we will have snow..That is my prediction..Now pay me haha

Yes, around there the leaves begin turning in August every year. This year, however, has been a little unusual because of very wet spring and very dry summer. Almost all the birch turned yellow and have lost most of their leaves already and that definitely is dry related, not seasonal. Soft maples especially usually start turning every August as do cherry. This year though, few of the cherry trees have turned yet or lost leaves. Acorn crop is light but do have some. A lot dropped before forming completely.

As for this coming winter, colder than last winter for sure but I do not expect much snow.
