The gasket on the lower cast iron plate needs to be replaced. I bought one, but didn't know it was held on by two one-way clips. Has anyone had any luck getting them off or do you just cut them and buy new ones?? I don't recall seeing them on the parts listing. They look like the clips on tricycle wheels that you pound on and once on, don't come off. Help please

My 92 does not use clips but I use gasket sealant to adhere the new gasket to cast wall. You probably could do the same, but someone may chime in as to why not.

Here is a picture of the clip that holds the lower cast iron plate gasket. There are two clips, one on each side. Second picture is of the old one from farther away, and you can see the center area is damaged.

I get mine at tractor supply. Can you measure how thick that gasket material is? Im going to try and order some from Mcmaster and cut my own.

If you look at the second picture, you will see a hemostat pliars. I grabbed the clip with those and gently twisted back and forth, and the clips came off. They aren't a tight fit like I thought. I measured the gasket material and it is 1/4" but must be hight temp or asbestos because it doesn't melt. I found the gasket for $36 at Mountain View Hearth Products. They also have a gasket kit which has the lower cast iron gasket, the combustion motor gasket and the temp switch gasket. It's called the annual cleaning gasket kit. My stove is back in operation.

Nice info Frank

Once you removed the clips the entire gasket comes off ? My gasket , except around the pellet feed opening is in good shape. I have the idea of
trimming the damaged area of the gasket ,then fitting a replacement piece ,adhered, with high temp gasket seal . Plans are just that though.

Nice to hear the gasket change out went well.

Here you go. I found these guys on the interweb. I did order an air sensor that I ended up not needing. They took it back...full refund. Would have been easy to say no returns on electrical parts, like I was expecting. Anyways, they have about anything you need for your Austroflamm.

FWIW, earlier this year when I replaced my lower cast wall gasket, I just used those tricycle wheel retainer things from Lowes. I also made sheet metal protectors for the gasket as well. Curious for the next tear down and see how everything went in there. I still don't understand the purpose of that darn thing. Why couldn't it just be a gasket around the pellet drop tube in the middle?

Yes, the gasket was not glued on, just held on with the two clips. I damaged the center around the pellet drop shute opening so replaced it. The clips were not self destructing like the ones on a tricycle axle. They came off with a gentle twisting motion. Tell me how your gasket hunt went.

They are 7/16,almost anything will work as gasket is pinched when installed. The gasket also seals the whole lower chamber, around the edges, important.

I have done that before with part of another gasket, worked fine.

Until Frank reported the gasket changeover I never tried to move or loosen the gasket. Assumed it was adhered with gasket sealer/cement.
Thanks Bob Bare , glad to hear my thoughts were not to far out there..

Bob , Thanks for all the great input on Austroflamm stoves . Your insight is tremendous ,.

In the future, when removing the lower cast iron plate, it's very important to keep it "in place" while loosening the three allen head screws holding it. I made the mistake of allowing it to drop down when the last bolt was removed. This allows the drop tube to hit the gasket material and damage it. To paraphrase the job, "remove the two outside screws, and then hold the plate up with one hand, and remove the center screw. Carefully pull the lower cast iron plate straight back to clear the gasket before allowing it to drop down."
That's my take on it. The replacement gasket material was 1/4" thick and is not glued in. The OEM gasket had a smooth side which was against the lower cast iron plate, and a rough side which was facing out. The two clips, at least on mine, were easy to remove with the surgical tweezers shown in one of my pictures above and push back on using my fingers. Hope this helps others.

I replaced the gasket on my '91 Integra, but I don't recall the clips. I just set it into place and let the pressure from the installation hold it up. Seems OK so far...

For those who order insulation from McMaster, what is the part number or type you use? I just looked, and some of that stuff is more expensive than just buying pre-cut off Ebay.
