I was able to justify apparent obsession with the MM and IR as learning curve when the wife and kids teased me about it. While watching The Walking Dead last night I think I crossed the line when I got charged up and blurted "hey! that's Ash" when I saw the rounds in the background. Is there a self-help group?

walking dead was a disappointment, i thought,,,,, but I didn't see the ash pile :cool:
 
My wife tells me the eight year old shouts out positions of down trees in the woods as they drive around town.

Obsession? I think you were wisely practicing your firewood ID skills during a harsh and trying winter. That is called survival skills.

Howdy Hills Hoard. Fellow wood burner and Mtbr as well. When I am riding trails and see downed trees I always try to ID them. There a fallen white oak at the top of one of the trails I ride that I would love to scrounge but as far as I know the county won't allow it.

Thats sad part, a lot of the wood is inaccessible to cars and would be illegal to take....nice of my friends to keep an eye out for me anyway...
 
Yeah, I can relate. I watched a recent episode of Sherlock where his father built a fire in a stove in the background and I paid attention to him instead of the characters in the foreground. I remember appreciating that his technique seemed real; even leaving the door open long enough for the fire to catch heat. Then I realized I wasn't paying attention to the story anymore...like you said -obsession!

The wife is usually warning me "keep your eyes on the road; stop looking at trees".....if I ever have an accident it'll be from that, not looking at girls-well, maybe lol!!!! :p ;lol

I'm a newbie with wood burning. It's mostly farmland here, but I now have this tendency of looking around while driving and thinking "probably lots of dead firewood in that grove... that tree and that tree would be great for firewood... I wonder how easy it is to get to it... I need to look at the county plat map to see who to talk to about it... oops, in the middle of the road, good thing there is very little traffic on this road" lol

We had "man weekend" at the Lake last w/e and thanks to this site and my (apparently) incurable obsession I scored big on a load of pine rounds. I thank the site because one of my buddies had a pile of two year-old pine in a pile that he refused to burn in his stove and just wanted to get rid of and I knew to grant him his wish because of what I've learned here.
 
Split and stack it let dry out real good , it will warm you just takes lots more than some other types.
 
Hi I'm Dave, and I have a firewood obsession. I've been kicking myself all day for missing out on a maple scrounge this morning. I woke up today and saw a free maple score on craigslist about 3 miles from my house, so I decided to go get a haircut then go load my truck up. When I got there a guy was pulling away with his truck and trailer loaded to capacity, and only a few gnarly pieces left. I've been beating myself up all day for not getting the wood before going for a haircut.

Its good to realize while reading this thread I'm not alone. I can't wait to tell the wife its perfectly normal behavior ( according to the guys here!)
